Will they sell out stadiums in the USA?

Every US show sold out in 2005 in the post-grammy lemming rush.

Week of show in Detroit and notices here on interference that GAs could be easily had for $20-30. Probably went south from there as showtime approached.

Ticketmaster sold all of its tickets on the last tour for the Detroit area. Yes, there may have been some scalpers who did not sell all their tickets or other people trying to resell tickets for whatever the reason, but the band is not concerned about that, nor do they make any money on such transactions.

That being said, Michigan has the worst economy in the United States. The only thing that might help is that if they play there it will be in June/July 2010 on the second leg. With no Chicago or Toronto shows on that leg, many fans from those cities might be pushed into the Detroit market.

They will have an extremely tough time in Detroit if they go the Stadium route. I live here and attend concerts regularily. It's a tough sell in a very depressed market. I was at Coldplay at the Palace and they had some areas draped off that they could of sold if the market was there in the uppers. I don't see it happening. Maybe 25,000 max.

Now that we have what seems to be official first leg dates, here’s my basic prediction for U2’s 2009-2010 360 North American Stadium tour:

My predicted schedule won't be exact but it should be pretty close to how the tour will turn out. Nearby markets that aren’t getting hit will obviously contribute to the overall GROSSES in the centralized markets that are being hit.

2/3 of the shows will be full.

What do you think about Vancouver at BC Place?

I saw them at POPMart and I was half the way up and a little bit upper seats. It sucked, BC Place sucks for sound but I think they will solve sound probs hopefully this time. Madonna played awhile back and i'm not sure but I heard the sound was pretty good. What do you think?

Hey, any chance you could post the peak positions for all U2's hits on teh HOT 100 Airplay Only Chart? I've been looking for this info for so long. Peeling off those Dollar Bills would probably be a better place to put it. Thanks :D

For the HOT 100 Airplay only chart, only have the songs from the last 3 albums, POP, ATYCLB, and HTDAAB. Best place to look for the other songs are in back issues of Billboard Magazine at a library. There is also the possibility if you contact Billboard directly, someone there might be able to look it up for you, for a fee.

I do think you under-estimate Texas and Atlanta. Also, I doubt U2 is going to play Cleveland on the same leg they play in Detroit and Pittsburgh. They'll most likely play in Columbus or Cincinnati to draw in people from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

Where are you getting information as to U2 playing 2 chicago, 2 Boston, 2 toronto and 3 nj shows when only one show has been announced for each city....is this just a guess that they'll add more dates?

Smaller markets won't sell out and bigger markets are getting second shows, and the second shows wont sell out by 5-10 thousand or so. Which is kind of a good thing for us people wanting to buy more than four tickets :)

I think that Chicago, Foxboro, East Rutherford-New York and Pasadena-Los Angeles may get return visits on the 2010 leg.

Also, for the 2009 leg, Raleigh has been taken off the list of cities mentioned on U2.com, so they may not get their show.

What we should concentrate on here are the GROSSES. The attendances, venue capacities & ticket prices can be adjusted, in relation to and based on what the GROSSES are.

There's no way 70,000 people will see them in San Diego. They'd be lucky to get half of that.

I live near San Diego and I will never see U2 at Qualcomm again. Qualcomm is a horrible place to see a concert, and the people who live in San Diego likely know that.

Generally speaking, most (maybe all?) major stadium shows in San Diego go to Petco Park now. Whether U2 would be willing to break their "football stadium only" policy is another question.

I am 49 & I have been following the band since 1980...trust me U2 is past it's prime & I went to the show in Tampa back in 1997 & it was halfull. Yes Popmart was not a success, but I went to the Joshua Tree Giants Stadium Shows in 1987 & Outside Broadcast shows in 1992 & those were pretty well sold out, but I don't see these shows selling out outside of the BIGGER cities

You can't compare shows in NY to those in Tampa.

I went to a Chicago PopMart show and it was sold out. So was the next night. This actually forced U2 to add a THIRD show in Chicago (which almost sold out - they finally saturated the market with that third show).

Likewise, shows in NY and Boston and other areas also sold out. In fact, the first part of the PopMart tour actually did very well, selling out nearly every performance. So to say a show in Tampa didn't sell out is the reason U2 are "past their prime" is ridiculous.

The last two tours saw arenas in the U.S., but U2 sold out 7 shows in Boston (split up) on the last tour - 7! In fact, they sold out everywhere.

I will admit that I doubt with this economy, U2 can sell out every stadium. And, realistically, there are markets where U2 simply aren't that big. But this hardly means U2 is "past their prime" when it comes to touring.

As a touring band, U2 is one of the more "sure things". And even if one doesn't love the new album that much, U2's catalog is brilliant - so people will see U2 just for that, the same reason people see the Rolling Stones.

That seems a bit low. The Rolling Stones sold out Scott Stadium in 2005 (also a mid-week show in October).

Remember though, the Rolling Stones only played 1 arena show in Washington DC, which naturally pushed people there into the Charlottsville market.

I think U2 are planning to play to more than 31,000 people at Scott Stadium. Otherwise, the stands would look completely empty with 50% of the attendance on the field if there was only 31,000 people in total.

U2 just soldout two shows at Ullivie Stadium in Gothenburg Sweden. Thats 70,000 people per show, a combined total of 140,000 tickets sold in just a few hours.

140,000 tickets just flew out the door in Sweden in a couple of hours. Milan still has not completely soldout yet, but there have been problems with the ticketing system.

Charlottesville may get an influx this time too (even from NC), as DC will get a lot of out-of-towners (e.g. from Philly, Baltimore, etc.). Hotel rates in Charlottesville are already going up for the "special event".

There's no way 70,000 people will see them in San Diego. They'd be lucky to get half of that.

If they don't play any shows in Los Angeles and Phoenix in the summer of 2010, they should be able to play to 70,000 people in San Diego. Oh by the way, they were able to do "half that" on POPMART.

Its been confirmed though that they are playing North Carolina, so I think they will just be dealing with the overflow from the DC show for Charlottesville.

Hershey was also played by the Stones, and is closer for Marylanders. I think Charlottesville will get close to a sell out, if not sell out. I might try for the auction there - it may even go for less than the $250 seats.

I was there, and I would say that it was less than 35,000.

Well if you really want to split hairs, thats correct. Here is the official numbers:

Here are the numbers of Los Angeles POPMART and Phoenix POPMART:

6. Tempe May 9, 1997 Sun Devil Stadium
GROSS: $1,673,317 ATTENDANCE: 33,539

23. Los Angeles June 21, 1997 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum GROSS: $3,329,775 ATTENDANCE: 65,488

Now imagine that U2 did not play Tempe or Los Angeles on the first leg of POPMART, where do you think the nearly 100,000 people in LA and Phoenix area would have gone to see them? A second thing to remember is that U2's current popularity is way ahead of where it was on POPMART. A third thing to remember is that there are ticket prices on this tour that are less than half of what they were on POPMART once you adjust for inflation.

Well if you really want to split hairs, thats correct. Here is the official numbers:

Please stop writing "Popmart" in all capital letters. You're giving me a seizure.

I think you're making a big assumption to say that U2 will play San Diego in 2010 without playing anywhere else in the Southwest, let alone Southern California.

Well, if they can skip San Francisco, Miami, and Philadelphia on Leg 1 of the North American tour, why couldn't they skip Los Angeles and Phoenix on Leg 2, especially since they had already been played on Leg 1?

140,000 tickets just flew out the door in Sweden in a couple of hours. Milan still has not completely soldout yet, but there have been problems with the ticketing system.

2 nights in Sweden is news to me, though I'm not surprised. They are the only appearance in all of Scandenavia..

They did remove one city from u2.com. Gleckoerfhlewruhflerhf or however it's spelled.

That's right, but this show will be re-announced next week!

"U2 360" will be visiting Norway, Denmark and Finland before the end of the tour. But considering how fast tickets sold in Gothenburg, they should be playing a third show there.

They might, but I don't think that you can take that for granted.

In fact, it would be difficult to imagine that the 2010 tour would only hit markets that were missed in the 2009 tour. Keep in mind that U2 made repeat visits to large markets on the added legs of the Elevation and Vertigo tours; there's no reason they wouldn't do the same thing on this tour.
