Just wondering if anyone has any info on where / when the nickname 'The Claw' originated?

Was it the official U2 name for the stage when the tour was announced? Or did it start with fans? Someone on Interference could be a contender for claiming it if so!

Actually, have any of the band ever called it the Claw? It's called that in most newspaper articles these days.

I think it was first mentioned in one of the Willie Williams diaries on U2.com.

Edit: I found it, in his entry of March 4th, 2009
One thing which has made me laugh is that the stage design has already earned its nickname. Above the performing area is a huge four-legged structure that effectively straddles the football field, from which all the paraphernalia of the show is suspended (this in lieu of a roof, being outdoors and all.) I've been working on this, off and on, for about two and a half years now, having shown the band the first drawings whilst we were still on the Vertigo tour. During the evolution of the structure it has, at various times, come to resemble several different things; a dockyard crane, a cactus, a giant crab, the Theme Building at Los Angeles airport. It went very Louise Bourgeois for a while, then a little space age. In its final incarnation though, its sleek curves and four talon-like legs have been dubbed "The Claw", remembering the fairground machine from Toy Story. This really amused me, spawning a fantasy of it descending and grabbing members of the audience, all of whom, presumably, would have three eyes.

Oh god so it was actually from Toy Story? I've been making that joke for years, had no idea it was actually inspired from it!!

I remember a Boston Vertigo show - I think it was Dec 5, 2005 - when everyone was in a festive mood, Santa came up on stage etc. Bono was chatty and asked Edge what he wanted for Christmas. Later on he asked Edge - "Are you a wheel man, or a claw man?" I guess he was asking Edge what kind of toy preference he had. I didn't hear Edge's answer but I think I now know what it was... and Willie must have been paying attention!

I'd rewatch the 360 DVD where the band talk about the making of the claw and the initial drawings.

This is complete BS.

I came up with the name on March 9th:

On March 10th, Willie posted his diary on U2.com and stated that the official name was The Claw, but he back dated the post as March 4th so as to make it look like it wasn't stolen.

I don't know if Willie has mentioned it, but I gave the center pole light thing the name
The Bonor.

That one is mine, since we're staking claims here. :D

I wouldn't admit that in public
