Aussie PS3 launch events draw modest crowds
Hundreds show up for midnight launches across Australia; retailers boasting record pre-sales amounts.

By Randolph Ramsay, GameSpot AU

Danny Zarka, from Pyrmont in Sydney, was the first to purchase a PS3 at the Myer launch event. The PlayStation 3 officially went on sale in Australia overnight, with hundreds of gamers lining up outside more than 500 retail stores across the nation to purchase Sony's latest console at midnight launch events.

The largest event was held at Sydney's Pitt St mall, where retail store Myer and Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) teamed up to present launch night activities which included prize giveaways, live demonstrations and a screening of Casino Royale on the big screen. Approximately 70 people lined up to grab their consoles at the Myer Pitt St store, with a hundred-strong crowd looking on. The PS3's arrival comes exactly one year after Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched in Australia. Microsoft's launch event for the 360--which was also held in Sydney's Pitt St mall--drew a crowd of close to 1000 people.

Approximately 70 people lined up at the Myer launch event.
Other retailers across Sydney also held launch events, most of which drew modest crowds. The Harvey Norman store at the Moore Park SupaCenta had close to 40 people attend its midnight launch activities, which included an appearance from Australian boxing great Kostya Tszyu. Tszyu was on hand to demo Fight Night Round 3, as well as sign the first PS3 sold at the store.

Over at EB Games at Bondi Junction in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, the launch crowd was even smaller, with approximately 20 people lined up outside the store to purchase their PS3s. Five major retailers opened late in the large shopping district of Chatswood, on Sydney’s North Shore. The EB Games at Chatswood had about 30 in their line, while the near-by Toys'R'Us store scored 20.

Despite the low turn-out, retailers were generally positive about the launch of Sony's next-generation product. Myer chief executive officer Bernie Brooks said his chain of stores experienced an extremely high number of PS3 pre-sales, citing the figure at more than A$2 million. Harvey Norman general manager for computers and communications Rutland Smith said his company is estimating that the PS3 will generate close to A$10 million in sales by Monday, with 50 percent coming from pre-orders.

SCEA is also bullish, reporting that more than A$20 million worth of PS3s had been pre-ordered prior to launch.

Business issues didn't concern gamers waiting in line for their console, though. Danny Zarka, the first person in line at Myer's Pitt St store, said he had been anxiously awaiting the PS3 for more than a year.

OH NOES SONY IS DOOMED!!!

Give me a break... The damn thing has been out for half a year and you'd think it was some sort major setback because there aren't enough people lining up for it in Australia...

Just checked most places indicate yep it will.....

yaaay for being able to play all my old final fantasies

If Sony does bleed anymore exclusives, it will lose a lot of marketshare, will probably still come out top though.

MGS4 will remain exclusive as Konami say it will only fit on a Blu-ray disc.

I can't see Final Fantasy ever going multiformat either.

Sony: FFXIII PS3 exclusivity under discussion
Sony France executive says in interview that Square Enix's latest installment may not be exclusive to the console after all.

By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
Posted Mar 22, 2007 6:36 am PT
One more platform-exclusive title may be going multiplatform, it has been revealed. The latest news appears to be that Square Enix's latest epic role-playing game, Final Fantasy XIII, may follow other titles--including Saints Row, Assassin's Creed, and Devil May Cry 4--that have now been announced as appearing on at least one other platform as well.

Sony Computer Entertainment France president Georges Fornay dropped the bombshell in an interview with French-language newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (subscription required). He said, "The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day [in France] 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games [for the PS3] by the end of 2007...As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion."

Fornay went on to say that he believed that the PS3 would be particularly successful in France, and that there had been approximately 60,000 preorders made (compared to 40,000 made for the Xbox 360, and 75,000 for the Wii). France will be getting approximately 150,000 of the 1 million consoles allocated to PAL regions.

He also answered questions about backward compatibility for the next-gen console, responding to fears that the console would not support many PS2 titles without the Emotion Engine. Fornay said, "Now, if you ask me whether this was a blow to the launch, I would say that [Sony] would have done better to be sure that the console would be completely backward compatible before announcing it. But hey, when it becomes clear what the PS3 is capable of, gamers won't really fancy playing PS2 [games] anymore..."

Square Enix had not returned calls to comment as of press time.

It's a bit arrogant to say that people won't want to play pS2 games anymore

I still play PS1 games, and will certainly still play my PS2 ones for a good bit yet til they get some decent games out on the next gen consoles.....

PS3 finally hits UK shelves
Sony sweetens the official launch event by dishing out HDTVs to everybody who queued up for the new console at midnight.
By Phil Elliott, GameSpot UK
Posted Mar 22, 2007 7:01 pm PT

Screenshot Index » LONDON--The trials of Sony's next-generation console during its long journey to European shores have been well documented. The higher relative price point, the three-month delay, and finally the removal of the PlayStation 2's chipset have all made negative headlines in the past year, to the increasing unrest of the population here.

But Sony finally unleashed the PlayStation 3 in the UK tonight, with a midnight launch at Virgin's flagship store on Oxford Street, London. After receiving warnings about safety from the Metropolitan Police, Virgin decided to prevent fans from sleeping rough and made space in its basement to accommodate the hardiest gamers.

Even so, not many took up this offer of hospitality, and with only a few hours to go before launch, there were just a handful of dedicated people lounging in sleeping bags, watching the clock. But as midnight drew near, more fans began to trickle into the store, and after some photo opportunities with the massed ranks of the media, they were ushered upstairs for the final hours to enjoy some light entertainment--including break dancing and basketball juggling.

Around 120 people had joined the queue shortly before midnight, and if the prospect of getting their hands on the latest bit of high-tech gaming hardware, along with a complimentary copy of Resistance: Fall of Man, wasn't enough, Sony had one final trick up its sleeve.

Just minutes before the tills were due to start ringing, a Sony representative made the shock announcement that everybody registered in the queue would receive a free Bravia 46" HDTV, something which took some time to sink in with the gobsmacked crowd.

Jason Sarris, from Wood Green in London, said, "I'm speechless, I still don't believe it. I think it's a hoax." Akwasi Poku, from Forest Hill, also in London, added, "It's restored my faith in Sony. I was thinking about getting an Xbox 360, because it's half the price, but now it's paid off."

It's just the sort of reaction that Sony Computer Entertainment UK's managing director, Ray Maguire, was hoping for. Moments after the first PS3 had been officially purchased, he told GameSpot UK, "The issue for me is that not many people here would have a flat panel HDTV. It should only be about a week before everybody's got them in their homes."

He went on to add that in the UK, only about 15 percent of homes contain a high-definition television, compared to around 25 percent in the US. "We're lagging behind, but just about everything being sold nowadays is flat panel, and we're in the situation that people are starting to wake up to 1080 [resolutions] rather than 720 [ones]."

Also attending the event was the president of Sony Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison. In a brief interview with GameSpot UK, he admitted that the past few months had been something of a rocky road but was keen to put the problems in the past. "I can't deny that we would have loved to have launched everywhere in the world last November, but that's behind us. The important thing is that people who buy a PS3 today or tomorrow will be getting a machine which has got a better network functionality, better firmware, a better variety of software, and a bigger range of Blu-ray movies."

The event at the Virgin Megastore was the only official event to take place at midnight, although there will be two further events taking place later in the morning at HMV and Game, also on Oxford Street, London. GameSpot UK will be at both venues to report all the details.

According to JeuxFrance. The PS3 launch party for France in front of the Eiffel Tower. Only 20 people ended up showing up.

JeuxFrance "article":[*] The official PS3 special event bombed: Sony put a boat in front of the Eiffel tower, ~20 people showed up, not including the Xbox360 boat you can see above[*] The Fnac Champs Elysées held its own special event, which bombed even worse: they got 5 clients top.
