surge protectors/UPS units....you get what you pay for, really. IMO surge protectors really aren't all that great and with the money you'd spend on one that really works well, you might as well get a nice UPS unit.

Martha, it depends on what you will use that surge for. there are dif ranges of these...a good one for a computer will cost about $50.
One for Audio/Video would start at $100. I recomend these for any Plasma/LCD and stereo equip.

Monster Cable makes some good ones but they can be expensive and in most cases overkill.

What's a UPS unit?

It's basically a backup power unit (UPS=Uninterruptible Power Supply). If the power goes out or there is a brownout/power surge, the UPS protects your equipment by providing it's own power, so you can keep working safely, or if there's a power outage, you can safely shut off your equipment.

One place people forget to protect against surges is through their cable modem. I had a client loose about 6 Macs to lightning that came in through their cable internet connection. The easiest way to protect against this is to find a UPS with an Ethernet jack. Just route the Ethernet cable from your modem to the UPS and then to your computer.
