IE problems caused by Windows Update?

For over 6 months now, I've been having problems with IE. About once a month, it will spontaneously start giving me errors, fail to open new windows, spontaneously close old windows I have open for no apparent reason, etc. Usually, I run Norton Utilities, reboot, and then it's fine again for weeks.

Over the past few months, I've noticed that this tends to occur when I have a Windows Update waiting to be downloaded and installed. I normally don't install updates immediately, because I'll be in the middle of working, with several apps and IE windows open, and with most updates, you need to reboot.

The trend seems to be this - I'll get the "updates are ready" message, ignore it, then within about two days, IE starts to act all funky till I do the installation and reboot. Is this coincidental, or are the problems caused by the pending updates?

Yeah, that's par for the course, typical IE behavior.

I've actually made the switch to Firefox as well...

Firefox isnt totally free of its issues/crashes though either.

Nope, at least once daily it likes to hog 95% of my CPU, but I'm attributing that to the fact that my laptop is ancient and is probably trying to commit technological suicide.

My biggest issue with it is that it is terribly memory demanding, and it handles the memory it allocates horribly. I'm not sure it ever releases it again. This is actually something you would expect of your everyday Windows application, not an open source program like Firefox.

I don't know, my Powerbook is pretty new and I get that too, as well as what U2Man said. Just can't seem to find anything I like much better though.

Glad to know I'm not alone then. I get it once every few days, maybe once a day if I'm on a lot. FireFox just won't open and when I check the running process it bounces between 50-100%. If I kill the process, wait 10 secs, and reload FireFox is goes fine. But yeah, I'd rather do that every once in a while than deal with IE.

Firefox being a memory hog is nothing short of reminding me of how Netscape used to behave.... Like a dinosaur.

On the other hand, IE7 loads as slow as a bobsled on cement.

Thanks for the information, everyone.

I think I'm going to hold off on Firefox for now. IE is really only problematic once a month, the fix is very easy, and I'm leery of the Firefox memory allocation problems that have been mentioned by some.

The first year I had internet access, around '96-ish, there were some sites that loaded very slowly with Netscape and IE, so I used to use Opera, and was very happy with it. That was about five computers ago, though. Is Opera still out there? How does it perform, relative to Firefox?

i don't have these memory hogging issues with firefox.

Opera is still there, i haven't used the latest version but the previous version was good, somewhat slower loading than firefox, but much better than IE.

Please don't be put of with the FireFox complaints! I think we'd all agree that it's still infinitely better than IE in many ways.

Yep... I'd agree with that.

Basically, until I beta tested IE7 for awhile I was a diehard IE6 user.... but seeing as though I wasnt very happy with what I saw (or didnt see) in IE7, I decided to give Firefox another chance at being my browser of choice --- it got the nomination, and won.
