idiotic question about t-mobile g1/htc dream

as the thread title implies, i've got a dumb question. i've tried to do some searching on my own, but i see conflicting information, so yeah.

i've got a t-mobile g1. it is unlocked so i can put any sim card in it i wish. however, the problem is, when i switch sim cards, i lose the ability to use any data (browse the internet, check email, etc.) unless i'm connected to wifi, of course. i do have a data plan with the other sim card, so it isn't that. am i missing something really obvious here? or is this something i need to go yell at t-mobile about? it would be nice to be able to actually use all aspects of my phone when i'm travelling.

When I switched my blackberry over to T-Mobile, I had to call T-Mobile and have them hook it up to the network, so that could be it.
