hard drive space

i had my computer for almost 6 years
it came with a 60GB hard drive. and i recently got an external hard drive for it.
which im glad i did cos on my main computers hard drive i got 6BG left

but when i look in program files, my installed programs add up to 7GB
so im wondering where is the other 40 or so GBs gone to??

any assistance?

Music and video usually take up the bulk of space on my computers....my laptop has something like 45 gigs of music.....and imy laptop only has a 70 gig hard disc.

as far as i know there isnt alot of music on the computer drive

Actually, what kind of programs are you running? I'm going to assume Windows XP, what else?

vitual memory takes up space, what do you have yours set at? Profiles can take up space (on XP look in documents and settings on your c: drive). Hidden files (i.e. hiding your porn)?

my virtual memory is set to 1726MB
that was minimum my compter told me to set it as because i was constantly getting virtual memry error.

and there is only 1 profile on this machine and thats mine.

and no, i havent hidden porn on my computer

But, mine's for Mac...anyhow, it will tell you what's taking up the most space on your hard drive, then if you don't need the files that are taking up lots of space, you can delete them.

One question: Do you delete your caches on a regular basis? That can take up a good amount of space as well.

i just cleared my temp internet files and cookie. my hard drive space went up 1GB

Best thing you can do is goto add/remove programs in the control panel and check how much space every program takes up...programs do not have to be installed to the folder program files, so you may have some outside of there taking up space...

Plus just go through your my documents and just check for random large files...I don't have all my videos in the one place, lots of stray ones lying about.......

But seriously, if you have an external drive move everything onto there or put it on DVDs and then...delete all the stuff from your main drive and see how much it goes up.

So go back to that first view and click on Documents and Settings and see which folders have a lot of stuff in them, and go about deleting some of it if needed.

i checkd the folders that have the most stuff and there is 10GB worth of files in the Temp directory in documents and settings > default > local settings > temp


also 5GB of stuff on my desktop
but thats easy to sort out. its just the temp files im not sure of
