DVR Box to External Hard Drive

I just got an external hard drive and was wondering if there's a way to transfer stuff on my DirecTV DVR box to there. It connects into a USB port on the front. Would I still need some sort of TV tuner or go-between?

Any advice here is welcome.

My guess is that the video on the harddrive is encoded in some odd, proprietary format and encrypted somehow, so you probably have to get some sort of USB device for your computer that accepts RGB input. However, some DVRs now do have SATA ports (like mine), and their purpose is for extra recording space. I'm not sure if you could just take that video and play or edit it, though; it's probably still encoded oddly and/or encrypted with a DRM-like system.
