What is the difference? I'm new to DVD technology. I just got a new laptop that can burn DVDs. I want to burn data discs that archive my photos. Maybe later on I want to make movies, but not at the mo'. I can't really figure out what each are for and which my drive needs. It's a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4084N drive.

They're just different formats. If you're going to use the discs in an older DVD player, DVD-R is the safest bet. If it's a newer DVD player (like 2005 and up), either would be fine. Also, you'd have to check to make sure that your DVD burner can burn both formats, although since it's new, it should.

Thanks. I just bought the comp. a few days ago so I'm assuming both will work. I think I bought Sony DVD-R b/c it was on sale but didn't want to open the package until I was sure.

Say I wanted to burn DVD movies, does it matter which type to buy for playing in DVD players (not computer drives)?
