Avast Antivirus Free Edition is lightweight. I recommend it. Usually, payware AV are bloated and restrict you. Norton is by the worse. McAfee is good in protection, but also bloated.

I would go with Avast over AVG. Both are very good.

But overall. I recommend a linux distribution. No AV needed. Pure speed!

AVG Free.
Simple and Effective. And doesn't slow down the system.

I had McAfee on my old computer but I ditched it when I got the new computer and put Microsoft Security Essentials on instead, so far seems to be doing its job (I practice safe surfing anyway). I have Avira on my netbook, that is working well too, although I might switch it to the Microsoft since MSE really runs very fast and unobtrusively.
