Can I get my CD burner to also burn DVDs?

OK, here's my dilemma. I have XP, but have only a CD burner in my PC. I have a TON of audio/video that I'd like to burn onto some DVDs (which obv. has more space than a CD), and I need to do it quickly because my backup/storage drive is starting to fail. I have prolly a good 20 gig worth of music and videos I need to back up.

Is there a good FREE app out there that can help me do this? I've downloaded a couple of them, but they both work up to a certain point, and then stop. I continue to run into problems because it's not recognizing the DVD when I put it into my player/burner (duh).

Or do I need some type of codec/converter to do this?

I think the only way you can burn DVDs is if you have a DVD/CD RW drive

No, you cannot burn DVD's with a cd-burner. You would need a dvd burner for that.
