best laptop for under $500?

just wondering what's the best laptop to get for around $500 or less? i don't know much about them and i don't have a lot of money to spend on one but i've been thinking of getting one (especially with my birthday and christmas coming up soon ). i'd want one th at has a dvd burner too of course.

suggestions?

I can't find any advertised online in that price range except refurbs. Maybe something used?

No DVD burner

Although, if I use my work discount and add the DVD burner, then it's $523.

I think it's going to be tough to go under $500 with DVD burner.

i think i've found the laptop for me

it's slightly more than $500 but not by much.

a friend of a co-worker had an acer aspire 3680 laptop at work the other night that he'd just gotten for $400 something $$. seemed like a really nice computer, 60GB HD, super fast, but the only thing it didn't have was a dvd burner, olnly a CD burner.

but for another $100 or so i could get the next model up which is the aspire 3690 and it does have a dvd burner.

i've heard acer is good, but i don't know that much about that brand.

My parents, my coworker, and I all have Acer notebooks and have not had any problems. It is the #1 bestselling notebook brand in Europe and #3 worldwide.

A friend of mine has this model actually, she's had it for months now loves it, and no problems.
