A little Dos help wanted!

Whenever I try to run a command, like, /ipconfig all or w/e, the commandprompt does popup, but it closes right away..
What causes that and, more important, how do I fix it? cause I think I need it to work in order to get a certain program to work..
and it would be nice to be able to actually read the settings on my pc

Start Menu->Run

type "cmd"

voila, your 'dos' window opens and is usable. should stay open till you close it manually.

Yea I noticed that, yet the program I'm trying to open still doesn't work
it's a .exe file, and when I try to open it it says something like: Cannot get access to said path,file or program. Perhaps you don't have the authority for the item.
Which is weird, considering I'm on an admin account of the pc.... perhaps it has something to do with my virusscanner saying it's a trojan horse?(which it's not btw)

Do you have Vista? If so you need to run cmd as an admin. Even if you are an admin it has to be run differently. In the Start Menu, enter a search for cmd.exe, then right click on it and select Run As Administrator.

yea my friend with vista told me that, but I"m on XP and I can't find such a function!
