do you realize how many people are out of work these days?

Saw it for the second time today. The flaws are still there (problems with pacing, ridiculously bad make-up jobs with Nixon, Sally Jupes, and The Comedian, some of Laurie's acting) but for the most part, I enjoyed it more. 9 times out of 10, this movie hits the right note, and that's all that matters to me.

Two awesome things I noticed during this viewing:

+ A muzak version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" playing when Ozy's meeting with Lee Iacoca and the other captains of industry
+ When Dan hacks into Ozy's floppy drive, one of the folders is marked "Boys."

One scene I liked more in particular was the one where Dan and Laurie have dinner. I absolutely loved seeing the entire conversation take place behind the outside glass, so you could see a reflection of the world around them. Those character-driven scenes, along with music-driven montages, are the highlights of the film... Snyder really fucking nailed those.

Best part of the whole movie is Manhattan's origin story on Mars.

Laz, your thoughts?

I gave my thoughts last night. Man, you're fucking amateur.

I noticed the Tears for Fears thing the first time, and had read about the "Boys" thing in advance, as well as porn being on one of the TVs Ozy is watching.

And I don't see what the big deal is with Carla Gugino's make-up. I think if you didn't know who she was, it wouldn't be noticeable. Plus I think it's likely she'd have plastic surgery done, so it's totally believable. The Comedian's didn't bug me either.

Nixon, that's another story. And the first scene with him in the war room was...awkward.

Snyder really missed the boat by not showing all the carnage at the end. Bad enough we didn't get to meet many of the "civilians", but we should have at least seen more of the aftermath of the attacks. I'm hoping the director's cut rectifies this.

I heard "everybody wants to rule the world" this time, i was glad they did not go with the full bore version, it would have been a bit much

someone complained about the loud rock music over the credits, it was the 3rd Dylan song in the movie, desolation row with a punk spin,
I was thinking it might be an 80s band/ singer, i thought, it might have been PIL, but checking the credits, it was My Chemical Romance. (not an 80s band) the second song in the credits was the L. Cohen song "First we take Manhattan'

the music worked pretty good, for an 80's frame of reference

Yeah, but that was fucking weaksauce compared to what I thought you would say, you know? I'm really interested in hearing what you thought of the re-tooled ending and such.

I was trying to spot as many things on the TVs as possible, found the '84 Apple commercial, Rambo, Mad Max, can't remember what else. The "Boys" thing cracked me up, since Rorschach's line about his possible homosexuality was cut in favor of Dan being there instead.

Gugino's was alright, I just thought she should've either looked a little more artificial or more haggard. The Comedian looked like a tired Edward James Olmos, and that cracked me up. Nixon's nose looked like the front of a fucking sailboat, it was ridiculous... that one's understandable, since it's a caricature anyway, but it's still a little too distracting.

Speaking of make-up, that shot of Wally Weaver dying looked exactly like Buster from Arrested Development.

Oh, one thing I missed the first time around that I fucking loved:

The steam in front of The Comedian's face when the camera first zooms out of his smiley pin. I was wondering where it was during the Dan/Laurie scene, but this was a welcome substitute.

Dylan's featured twice in the novel anyway, so that didn't bother me. The awful cover of "Desolation Row" did, however, especially when the rest of the music worked so well, I thought. Why not end it with some of Tyler Bates' awesome work... It was like Tangerine Dream meets Vangelis, twinged with a little Explosions in the Sky.

How old was he supposed to be?

I was trying to do the math, I think I got 67 years old?

That sounds about right, yeah. He and Sally Jupiter were around the same age, if I remember correctly.

Another awesome little snippet:

In the "Happy Retirement, Sally" section of the opening credits, The Silhouette and her lover are on one side, and Hooded Justice and Capt. Metropolis are on the other. Nice little nod there.

What the steam thing you're talking about??

In the novel, it's when Laurie's in Dan's kitchen talking about Jon, and how he's "walking through a mist" and you see her masked underneath the steam from a tea kettle.

Here, that's recalled in the opening shot, but with The Comedian instead.

Oh, and Laurie also gets Manhattan's "Nothing ever ends" line, which I totally missed the first time.

I met this dude once at a book signing. He's an asshole.

Yeah, I don't know why I said that. I say stupid things sometimes. I actually did have a brief conversation with him once and he was a perfect gentleman. And he's a great writer. Sorry, Roger!

Anyways...Watchmen. That Malin Ackerman is a nice girl, huh?

I'm a fan of her distant relative:

"The world will look up and shout, 'Save us.' And I'll whisper, 'It's a trap!"

I liked the film,
there has been a lot of talk about the casting.

the weakest link, was night owl II,

Patrick Wilson is a bit of a light weight
he was fine as the whimpy lead in Lakeview Terrace.

he has a hot wife in real life,

one would think he could do a believable sex scene

yes, he was good in that, I do think that love scene was better

that character was kind of a wimp, too.

interesting that Jackie Earle Haley was in that film, also.

the 2nd one ? on the archie?

I will go back and look at my book, yeah I got the top 100 (graphic) novel

Yes, that one, where Archie jizzes fire into the NYC skyline.

I don't recall reading it that way in the text, but I think it heightens the whole idea of their almost sexual perversion to crimefighting pretty well.

I saw it tonight. I haven't read the book and I really don't care one iota for comics in general so I have never read any of them except for maybe a few pages at a time.

I felt kind of lost in the first half an hour or so. One other person seeing it with me who also had no idea what Watchmen was said she felt the same. And after that, I thought it was fine. Nothing really extraordinary, but not a bad movie either. That sex scene was ridiculous, I hope it was supposed to be funny because it sure as hell came across that way.

I was also a little surprised at how much blue penis we saw.
