Wrath of Khan is now(?) on Netflix, so I sat down tonight and watched it. One thing that struck me: Khan arms the Genesis Device on the Reliant ~90 minutes into the movie. Something to keep in mind the next time I sit down for a 2.5-3 hour bloated epic.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - International Trailer (HD) - YouTube

I'd like to tell myself I'm a Star Trek fan that has no problem criticizing the problems of the original serieses; but seeing this most recent stuff I'm not getting a "Star Trek" spiritual vibe here from Abrams. That "fit through a tight gap" bit feels like Abrams thought of it as the best chance he'd have to do a Star Wars tribute.

I'm betting that Cumberbatch does the now-expected villain move and allow himself to be captured as Part Of The Plan.

That poster totally looks like a generic action movie, I'd have no idea it was Star Trek if it didn't say so in the title.

But I guess they don't want to market this movie as Star Trek internationally, since the franchise has never really been as big a deal outside of the US.

I don't see the big deal. I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation when I was growing up and it was certainly my first foray into science fiction. I just don't think this generation of teenage boys appreciates science fiction in the same way. To them, Transformers was a great science fiction movie about a cartoon they may or may not have watched on reruns. I watched it and I felt like the five-year-old inside me was crying into his cereal.

Generally speaking, the last Star Trek was great. It had enough references to the original movie and still kept it fresh for the new audiences. It was a good balance. This one looks slightly more Earth-based. While that does irk me, I have faith that it will have that good balance to it again. I can agree with the poster who said that now audiences expect mass destruction. If the original Die Hard were released today, it would not do as well with the teenage boy audience they always pander to with movies like Transformers and the new Die Hards. (All he does is walk on glass? Big deal. He killed a helicopter with a car in the fourth one!) There's also something to say about the availability of CGI. Twenty years ago, Jurassic Park was a majestic feat. We get aliens with intricate facial expressions now (Avatar). The next step is probably going to be ridiculous.

Anyway, I got long-winded again. I look forward to this movie and I'll reserve judgement until I finally see it. Watch this space...

I'm super excited no matter whether it's earth-based or not. I thought the last one was really great. Even if this one isn't quite as good, I think it'll still be fun for sure.

Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof wrote the story/script. I imagine there was some input from Abrams, but my feeling for the way these guys work together is that Abrams has little to do with this story.

And things often go better that way for them when this is the case.

I have to say, from what I've seen so far I'm rather hoping that the movie is better than its promotional material. I loved the 2009 reboot and frankly so far it doesn't feel like this one is even set in the same world. Plus the shortage of Spock in the promo material concerns me, it looks like the movie is much more Kirk-centric. And while Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome and is sure to make a much better villain than Eric Bana, another story about a villain with revenge agenda sounds rather lazy.

The best two Star Trek movies have a villain with a revenge agenda. I'll have more of that and be happy about it.

All of this.

I'll see this. But I'm not very excited about it.

believe me this has been 'market tested' to death

and as some one that was a kid in the late 60s, I do remember sitting around the 'color' t v set on Thursday? nights to watch Nimoy and Shatner.
We thought the sets and effects were fantastic. For the time they were good.

The last movie was very good. Using Nimoy worked well.

I just want another decent movie. I'm not even sure what the real Star Trek is anymore with all the spin offs and reincarnations.
