Well I think they're certainly comparable, they're about extended crime organizations in poor areas, and both go for a certain amount of realism.

And while Lance is right that City of God had more traditional plotting, but to me it just works better as art. I don't think the stylization comes off as poverty porn (which was a criticism leveled at Slumdog Millionaire), but it allows the film to transcend the subject matter, whereas Gomorra comes off more as just a document. An interesting one, but it just didn't stick with me as much.

To be fair, it's been a while since I've seen City of God, and I'm still coming off the high of seeing a great theatrical film in March, so who knows.

The real unsung, underseen gems from last year are Fatih Akin's The Edge of Heaven (same guy that did Head On), and The Secret of the Grain. Fucking phenomenal films, and I don't even know if they got decent arthouse releases. I found both online.

My Best Friend’s Girl – Jason is a waste of time in this, again Kate Hudson is gorgeous but why does she play so many similar roles, and Dane Cook is so hot in this I almost exploded with excitement at the scene he cries at movie and wears like a combat top and a cap – omg Im such a sucker for cap-wearers! WOW! So on the whole – 6 outta 10, 6 mainly cause Dane was good in this.


Turn It Up – yep, Centre Stage 2 and not, I repeat NOT as good as the first. She looks hot thou, reminds me of Sofia. He is cute – all in all 8 outta 10 only because I love watching the dance!


The Women = 2 outta 10.

The original Center Stage is one my very guiltiest pleasures - whenever I stumble across it on cable, I have to stop and watch it.

I know! That whole dance is awesome. It was the first place I'd ever heard that Jamiroquai song. And now stupid Napoleon Dynamite gets all the credit for having a big dance sequence set to the song. Whatevs, it was totally Center Stage.

I saw it, but don't remember anything about it except that Julia Stiles was in it. So that probably sums up what I thought of it.

Perhaps the most overrated, unfunny comedy I've ever seen in my life.

see, I find Stiles a bit stiff. but all in all its a good movie.

its just, its like rubbing a grater over your boobs at slow speed when watching Stiles talk and move during most of the movie, ya know?

Maybe you weren't. It was pretty perfect for the mood I've been in the past few days. I mean I can see why you became bored with it. The disjointed narrative and quiet tone of the entire thing could possibly do that.

Rachel Getting Married

I liked it quite a bit. Parts of it were brutal, and parts were just wonderful. Anne Hathaway deserved every lick of praise and award/nomination she got.

Saw it last night. Loved it! The hand-held actually didn't bother me, which completely shocked me since I usually get as motion sick as Saracene.

Oh yeah and you're completely right Cori -- that "toast" at the rehearsal dinner - that was BRUTAL!
