Probably only known to Australians. We came to know and love him as one of the Doctors on the fly on the wall show RPA.
A great man who will be dearly missed.

CANCER specialist Chris O'Brien will be remembered as a gifted clinician and someone who could reach out to his patients in their darkest days, colleagues say.

Prof O'Brien has died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) after a three-year battle with brain cancer.

A statement on Friday from the Lifehouse Sydney Cancer Centre at RPA confirmed he had died overnight.

His wife Gail, his children Adam, Juliette and James and other close family members were by his side.

Prof O'Brien was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain tumour, in November 2006.

His condition deteriorated significantly in recent days and he was admitted to RPA on Wednesday evening.

Long-time friend and Lifehouse colleague Michael Boyer said Prof OBrien was as gifted as he was compassionate.

"Chris was a gifted clinician who combined outstanding technical skill as a surgeon with an ability to sincerely reach out to patients experiencing the dark days of serious illness,'' Prof Boyer said in a statement.

"When Chris became a patient himself, his courage in facing his illness head-on made him an inspiration for many people throughout the community.''

Prof Boyer said Prof O'Brien's wife Gail and his family were grateful to the many people who had shown support during his battle with cancer.

They have requested that their privacy be respected.
