So here's a fun little thing I found on another site. Pick your favorite winner of the decade from each category.

I think the idea would be to pick what is the best from each list, not necessarily what was the most deserving in that particular year.

PICTURE

2001 A Beautiful Mind

2003 The Return of the King

2009 Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side

SUP. ACTOR
2000 Benicio Del Toro, Traffic
2001 Jim Broadbent, Iris
2002 Chris Cooper, Adaptation
2003 Tim Robbins, Mystic River
2004 Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby

2005 Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
2006 Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
2007 Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton
2008 Penelope Cruz, Vicki Cristina Barcelona
2009 Monique, Precious

Those are the big six, maybe we can do a follow-up with the screenplay awards, cinematography, and editing, or something.

This was harder than I thought it would be, mostly due to some iffy quality on display:

FILM - No Country For Old Men
DIRECTOR - Steven Soderbergh, Traffic
ACTOR - Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
ACTRESS - Marion Cotillard, Ma Vie En Rose
SUP. ACTOR - Christop Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
SUP. ACTRESS - Cate Blanchett, The Aviator

Supporting Actor was the toughest to call, some great and memorable performances in there.

I'd do one of these, but I'm afraid it would come out looking exactly like Monkeyforeskin's, except maybe with the Coens for BD.

PICTURE
2003 Return of the King

More a recognition of the entire series, which I really do enjoy, and definitely moreso than the rest of the BP winners of the decade. No Country is right up there next to it, though. Maybe I'll call it a tie.

DIRECTOR
2005 Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain

It still sucks that this lost to Crash.

ACTOR
2007 Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

No brainer. Although it's not even his best performance of the decade.

ACTRESS
2002 Nicole Kidman, The Hours

I adore this movie, and Kidman's section was the best part of it.

SUP. ACTOR
2009 Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

Another no brainer.

SUP. ACTRESS
2003 Renée Zellweger, Cold Mountain

Same as above, I just really, really love this film. And this is easily the most I've ever liked Zellweger on screen and she's perfect in the role. Blanchett is a close second.

Question - did Laz not include the screenplay awards because he can't bring himself to type 2007 Diablo Cody, Juno?

PICTURE
No Country for Old Men

DIRECTOR
Steven Soderbergh, Traffic

ACTOR
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

ACTRESS
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line (Only film of the bunch that I've seen)

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds (Insanely hard to choose between him and Bardem)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett, The Aviator

On a separate note, maybe it would be more fun to delve into the nominees for each year and evaluate that later.

ARGH

2004 was a tough year, they should have declared a damn tie between DiCaprio and Fox

It shouldn't have been either of them. It should've been Paul Giamatti for Sideways, but what do you know, he wasn't nominated.

It shouldn't have been either of them. It should've been Paul Giamatti for Sideways, but what do you know, he wasn't nominated.

I like that movie...Paul Giamatti is great. I really enjoyed John Adams and Cold Souls

HERE'S MINE:

PICTURE
2007 No Country For Old Men

DIRECTOR
2006 Martin Scorsese, The Departed
2007 Joel & Ethan Coen, No Country For Old Men
2009 Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker

ACTOR
2007 Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
2008 Sean Penn, Milk

ACTRESS
2001 Halle Berry, Monster's Ball
2003 Charlize Theron, Monster
2007 Marion Cotillard, Ma Vie En Rose (I've never seen a young actress play an old women quite as well as she did)
2008 Kate Winslet, The Reader

SUP. ACTOR
2007 Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men
2008 Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
2009 Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

SUP. ACTRESS
2004 Cate Blanchett, The Aviator (This women IS PERFECTION)

I'd do one of these, but I'm afraid it would come out looking exactly like Monkeyforeskin's, except maybe with the Coens for BD.

Yeah, mine is very close to his as well.

ACTOR
2007 Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

No brainer. Although it's not even his best performance of the decade.

This.

SUP. ACTOR
2009 Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterd

Another no brainer.

I don't know about that. As MS said, this category is the toughest for me. I think Ledger and Bardem are equally iconic as villains.

SUP. ACTRESS
2003 Renée Zellweger, Cold Mountain

Same as above, I just really, really love this film. And this is easily the most I've ever liked Zellweger on screen and she's perfect in the role. Blanchett is a close second.

A lot of people DESPISE this performance but she was the heart of the film for me.

Question - did Laz not include the screenplay awards because he can't bring himself to type 2007 Diablo Cody, Juno?

I thought the more categories I included, the less responses I would get. As I said in the original post, we can do a follow-up with the nerdier/tech categories.

I haven't finalized mine yet, but I feel I'm at a disadvantage for not seeing Cotillard's film yet. There are many people who think hers was the best of the decade by far.

I'm very behind on last year's films so the list only covers 2000-2008.

PICTURE
2003 The Return of the King
*I felt the Oscars got this category wrong for most of the decade and Return of The King was an easy choice.

DIRECTOR
2003 Peter Jackson, The Return of the King
*The Coen brothers were a close second.

ACTOR
2003 Sean Penn, Mystic River

ACTRESS
2003 Charlize Theron, Monster

SUP. ACTOR
2001 Jim Broadbent, Iris
*Easily the hardest choice but I think Jim Broadbent stole the show in Iris.

SUP. ACTRESS
2003 Renée Zellweger, Cold Mounatin
*I wasn't a fan of the film or her as an actress but she was amazing in it.

Nice thread, here's my picks;

PICTURE
2005 Crash

DIRECTOR
2009 Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker

ACTOR
2009 Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart

ACTRESS
2007 Marion Cotillard, Ma Vie En Rose

SUP. ACTOR
2009 Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds (BTW< this was the easiest choice)

SUP. ACTRESS
2009 Monique, Precious

Actually, I forgot about seeing Erin Brockovich, which is okay. Great to see the Roberts/Bullock combo bookend the Best Actress category for the decade.

One could make a similar argument for Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line as the creamy filling to a populist sandwich, but I liked her performance enough.

I was going to do one, but Jeez, I really am not at all familiar enough with the material. I think I know what my next Netflix binge will be.

One could make a similar argument for Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line as the creamy filling to a populist sandwich, but I liked her performance enough.

To be honest, Witherspoon's competition that year (at least with the fellow nominees) wasn't that great.

And yeah, I thought she did a great job.

Yeah, I just looked up the nominees for that year. Not having seen all of them, I can't judge.

I really loved Naomi Watts in King Kong from that year, too.
