(Mods, if this should go somewhere else, or if there already is a discussion of it somewhere please...)

For U.S. folks:
We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $14.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 2 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $11.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $19.98 a month ($7.99 + $11.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

Now, unlimited streaming for $7.99 is still a good deal, but I love Netflix for the obscure DVDs you can find. The streaming quality is not always great, too.

I'm not sure what to do because I like it both ways. However, there are months were I am too busy and have 2 DVDs sitting on my player getting dusty because I can't get to them. :reject:
$20 per month is getting close to just waiting and buying DVDs when they hit $5, $7 or $10 at Target.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Suggestions?
Is anyone actively using Comcast's Xfinity options online? What's the latest with Hulu?
I'm only a torrent fan for U2 and a few other bands, so I'm not likely to do that for movies and TV shows.

I'll probably let them put me in the "both" service for now, because I keep intending to use the streaming service more, but if it turns out I'm still not using it, I'll drop down to the DVD only feature.

This statement can go into the "taking quotes out of context can be funny" pile.

Oh and Netflix sucks donkey balls.

Honestly, I was going to put the  next to it, but remembered that Interference needs no encouragement.

And, if I could get it both ways for $20 per month? Then... done!

i never used the DVD service, only the streaming service. my hope is that many people will abandon the DVD servicd and switch to streaming only, forcing Netflix to add more titles.

yep, that's my dream n' shit.

There is another thread where we're discussing this in Lemonade Stand, but I don't mind having another place to bitch bitch bitch about this. I'm really not sure what I'm going to do, but I don't want Netflix to think they can get away with not just two price increases in one year, but a FIVE DOLLAR one to boot.

I was gonna downgrade earlier this year but was hesitant. I think this ordeal has pushed me in that direction.
I think I'm gonna see what the list of streaming movies on hulu+ is and then decide if it's worth just canceling my six-year-old account and switching over.

This movie would make sense if they said that within the next year or two they'd be getting their entire catalogue on instant watch, but if you're gonna be paying more for the same crap offerings, what's the point?

from what i've seen, Hulu+ isn't very strong in the movies department.

Hulu's Criterion and NBC connections were enough for me to buy into an account with a few of my friends. They've also got a ton of Miramax titles.

hmm...i suppose that's an idea. have you run into any problems with you and your friends being logged in under the same account at the same time?

Yes, but we let each other know if we're gonna watch something.

The fact that I've had an Enter the Void Blu sitting here for a few months is evidence enough that I should only keep my instant stuff.

Just watched The 39 Steps streaming last night--decades since I'd seen it. I think I could just do streaming, but my queue has a shitload of DVDs that aren't available streaming yet.

Martha, it's pretty easy to put a cable from you laptop into your TV so that you can watch it on the bigger screen (I'm assuming your TV is bigger than your laptop  ).
We have a laptop dedicated to our entertainment center set-up, so iTunes and Netflix go out through our TV and stereo system.

I think what will kill DVD delivery for me is if the U.S.P.S. gets rid of Saturday delivery. That will f-up everyone's chances to get the most of their DVD service.

I'm in your situation. I'm actually inclined to dump the streaming since there are so few titles. Maybe I can hurry up and finish season 4 of Friday Night Lights. . .after that there isn't much on my streaming que that I wouldn't be fine just getting on DVD. (The TV series are nice to have streaming because you don't have to wait between discs to see the next episode).

My husband's gone for the night, so I was going to watch something streaming. The only things on our queue that are available for streaming are the old biker movies that he likes. I'd ditch the streaming if it weren't for those.

Friggin' Netflix.

Yeah, and it's a really good Sony, and we only replace stuff when it breaks, so we may have this TV for another 12 years or so.

Our family's Sony Trinitron 19" from 1970 lasted for more than 30 years.

(Actually it didn't break, just no one wanted it anymore)

Dear XXXX,

I messed up. I owe you an explanation.

It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. Let me explain what we are doing.

For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something – like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores – do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us). So we moved quickly into streaming, but I should have personally given you a full explanation of why we are splitting the services and thereby increasing prices. It wouldn’t have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do.

So here is what we are doing and why.

Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD. DVD is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection of movies.

I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolves, without maintaining compatibility with our DVD by mail service.

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures, that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently.

It’s hard to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”. We chose the name Qwikster because it refers to quick delivery. We will keep the name “Netflix” for streaming.

Qwikster will be the same website and DVD service that everyone is used to. It is just a new name, and DVD members will go to qwikster.com to access their DVD queues and choose movies. One improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Members have been asking for video games for many years, but now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done. Other improvements will follow. A negative of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com websites will not be integrated.

There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). If you subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the same as your current charges. We will let you know in a few weeks when the Qwikster.com website is up and ready.

For me the Netflix red envelope has always been a source of joy. The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a Qwikster logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still, it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you.

I want to acknowledge and thank you for sticking with us, and to apologize again to those members, both current and former, who felt we treated them thoughtlessly.

Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your trust. We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than words. But words help people to understand actions.

Respectfully yours,

-Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix

p.s. I have a slightly longer explanation along with a video posted on our blog, where you can also post comments.

This is so fucking stupid. I like having the option to choose between dvd and streaming in one place. Who hired this loser?

And Qwikster???? WTF?? Why not....wait fort it... Mailflix? Less lame, more true. If there were any way to cancel everything and get this stuff elsewhere I would.

I'm just waiting for the USPS to get approval to cancel Saturday delivery, so waiting for DVDs in the mail will be even more annoying.

Hello start-up company! Someone (besides Blockbuster) should be able to blow ClusterFlix out of the water now.

That was a dumb letter from the CEO. You might as well just spin off the infrastructure and get out entirely, rather than have this weird counter intuitive amalgamation and pretend it makes sense.

But it's kind of interesting, I think there may be a generational split about the utility of the streaming service. Between Friday Night Lights, Doctor Who, Breaking Bad, Louie, Twin Peaks, Damages, the Star Treks, Avatar, all the James Bond films piling up, a decent selection of older movies, and the ability to watch in HD through my PS3, I've never had any problem with streaming-only Netflix. Waiting on DVDs through the mail seems like such a drag, dude. bro.

I can envision some day in the future when I've gone through these series that the status quo level of selection becomes inadequate, but right now I can barely keep up.
