:(

David Letterman is not in production today and he won't be back until Monday with a new show, but the late night host just issued a statement about the death of Calvert DeForest, who appeared on his show dozens of times since 1982 as the funny, low-key Larry Bud Melman.

“Everyone always wondered if Calvert was an actor playing a character, but in reality he was just himself - a genuine, modest and nice man,” said Letterman “To our staff and to our viewers, he was a beloved and valued part of our show, and we will miss him.”

DeForest died on Monday at age 85.

I'm so sad! We loved "Larry Bud Melman". He hadn't been on in years - don't know if it was because of the move to CBS back in '93. He will be missed

Hubby just reminded me that back in the late 80s we went to Vegas to catch one of the Anniversary shows. It was filmed at Bally's. He recalls using the phone system to page Larry Bud Melman  Good times!

I saw Will Ferrell on the Today Show this morning, skating with Meredith. She tried to skate under his legs and she fell and hit her head-she tried to laugh it off but I think she really hurt herself.

I think I'll see that movie, it better be funny and not awful.

Monday's show was Letterman's first night back after being sick as well as March Madness getting in the way of the schedule (they usually show reruns on those nights). Anyways, he did a little tribute to Calvert DeForest, aka Larry 'Bud' Melman.
