It should have been the Lazenby era instead of the Moore era.

I'm a big fan of Goldeneye. Even though in retrospect it's a bit 90s-cheesy, I still love the vibe and the Pierce Brosnan/Sean Bean pair does a lot for it. A few months ago I finally caught Dr No, which is a marvelously half-formed primordial version of where the series would later go. The best example of this is the climactic set piece being kind of a community theater version of the battling-with-the-henchman-over-a-vat-of-acid idea we're used to now- you can imagine future directors penciling in twice the explosions around catwalks twice as high with better paid stuntmen, but it still starts here.

From Russia With Love's focus on the train for a good portion of the film was as refreshing as For Your Eyes' mountain climb. There was a point where, watching Die Another Day in theaters, we see a giant space-laser blasting a path across the Korean DMZ and I thought to myself no, this scale is not quite what I want from the series.

I'll keep the secret island volcano lairs, though.

For Christmas I got a Daniel Craig bluray three pack of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. I was more fond of Quantum and less fond of Casino then the rest of the world it seems, but I've only seen them once each so we'll see how a revisit changes things. Skyfall I've rewatched, and while there's a discrete 10 minute section of the movie chock full of dumb (escape/subway crash/Tennyson poetry), I still buy into the rest of the film. Glad to hear Mendes returns.
