If I'm the one to choose I wonder if many of you watched The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.

Yup, I loved the whole metaphor going on in the whole story. It's the only Peter Greenaway film I've watched though.

It's brillant. It's hard to come across if you expect to find it on dvd but I believe it's easy to find on the internetz.

You should bring it up when it's your turn....and if too many people have seen it, you can always choose another.

Yeah, when it's my turn I guess I'll go with it. But I've got several to pick from so I'm not sure yet. Anyway, this was just the first one to pop up on my mind, being so amazing and all.

Damn it, now that I'm thinking about it there's so many titles coming to my mind - that I have and haven't seen. I guess the hardest part will be to choose one of all those.

I'm participating, yeah, but I think I'll hold off on suggestions until later rounds. It's high time I take cues from the more knowledgeable cinephiles here, so I'd like to try one of those I haven't seen to kick things off.

Side note, my spell check doesn't recognize the word cinephile. For some reason, it wants me to correct it to pedophile. That actually might work in the context of my previous statement.

I feel with Lance running it now, it would only be appropriate for us to "do two at a time".

Que excelente!

I'll go to my grave telling you that you're not missing anything. That donkey was pretty hardcore, sure, but nothing else in that film has ever worked for me. Probably my most hated of the classics of the golden age of world cinema. I'm not fond of all of 'em, of course, but I actually hate that film.

Well I knew Shouter would be the other one.

I've been reticent to check out more Bresson, because I know that stuff (non-actors, misery porn) is not up my alley. I've only seen Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne, and that's earlier and a bit more stylistic for him, from what I've read. I enjoyed it a lot, though, but only saw it because I heard it was a major influence on Jacques Rivette's Duelle (which is SO worth tracking down online, the only place you'll find it).

I can't recommend A Man Escaped (Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut) strongly enough, and he's clearly no hack. Great use of sound in that film, I think. But you pretty much hit the nail on the head, as far as my objections go--non-actors (and TERRIBLE ones, by and large) and misery porn.

Balthazar was one of the most hilariously awful films I've ever seen, and seemed willfully proud of it. You really should watch it, I suppose, because great films don't get much worse. Or, well, I don't think they do. It's a spectacular example of how not to act, how not to cut, how not to write (there is almost no internal logic to the film, which became infuriating after the 100th random action/event, 20 minutes in), how not to do sound, how not to film a donkey, and so forth.

Robert Bresson is going to be very disappointed.

There's someone (which I forgot completely about also) whose films I should probably watch sooner than later. Oh well, I'll get to him someday I guess.

Alright, the hat has spoken. The following shall be the order for film selections as per the guidelines suggested. If I forgot anybody (I don't think I did) or if anybody wants to join in along the way, I'll simply add them to the end of the current cycle.

LemonMelon
Gump
Beav
NSW
Jive Turkey
LMP
Lance
Ashley
Dalton
Shouter
Laz
GAF
Heathcliff
Impy
Cori
Tourist
Powerhour

So, LMel is up first. As for when the first film should be selected, I'm open to suggestions. Basically which day of the week would we like to begin each round? If Mel could chose something and post it by, say, this Monday the 21st, we can give everybody until the following Monday the 28th to watch, then start discussion for that full week until Gump has something selected for the 5th? Just the first thing that came to mind, but we can do whatever. Let me know.

Also, Mike, would you like to edit the turn list into your original post?

I think all of the above sounds good re: day of the week to start...Monday just seems like a good day to me.

Also, even though I suggested 3 week cycles, I do like 2 weeks better and I hope it works.

It's too late, methinks, to edit the turn list into my original post.

Once again, thanks for taking over for me.
