My Glist by GLG
After two rather tepid Glee episodes (saved by Mike Chang’s abs, Heather Morris’ fierce dancing and the introduction of Uncle Jesse DDS), the show came back in an episode that was both thought-provoking and entertaining. I think for the most part it respected people of all faiths and non-faiths, and didn’t sink down to too much sugary and treacly “After School Special” preachy-ness.
1) Grilled Cheesus-the latest offering from Pizza Hut. Goes well with its stuffed crust pizza.
2) Sure, seeing an image of Jesus on your grilled cheese is pretty cool, but I’d prefer an image of Mike “The Situ-asian” Chang’s abs.
3) Burt Hummel is the best dad on TV, and when he had his heart attack my very own heart nearly stopped.
4) Puck, “Jesus is my number 1 Heeb.” Can we get that on a Christmas card?
5) I was rather put off that the nastiest character on the show, Sue Sylvester, is an Atheist. The nastiest, most vicious people I have ever met have been extreme right wing Christians.
6) Although the Gleesters meant well by praying over Burt Hummel, but I wish they would have respected Kurt’s Atheism. Being a non-believer does not make anyone deficient. Plenty of non-religious people believe in the concepts of compassion, charity, social justice and kindness. And yes, so do people of faith. I’ll step off my soap box.
7) Does Finn pray for world peace or an end to world hunger? Nope, he prays to touch Rachel’s boobies. He’s such a teen-age boy.
8) Once again, my girl Emma proves to be one of the few actual mature-acting adults on this show. I found her advice to Finn to be sensitive and sensible. And her outfits were all kinds of adorable.
9) Kurt, “Christ chic.” Something that will never be said about the Duggars. And I loved his fabulous hat!
10) Finally an episode where the plot guided the music and not the other way around. I was blown away by Rachel’s “Papa, Can You Hear Me” and Mercedes and her choir’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Puck’s “Only the Good Die Young” was sex on a stick. But dear, sweet Baby Gay Kurt’s “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” absolutely killed me, especially with the scenes of little Baby Gay Kurt and his father. And because if John Lennon had lived he would have been 70 years old this Saturday.
11) Quinn is one character who has expressed her faith since the series’ beginning, yet she was given short shrift in this episode. I wish they would have focused on her more. Certainly she’s going through something considering she gave a baby up for adoption.
12) And there is a God. Will Schuester’s melodrama was kept to a minimum. He actually made glee club more about the kids instead of his selfish needs. Could Mr. Schue finally be growing up?
