A far distance down.

Golden Globes Awards | The Hollywood Foreign Press Association <-- Nominees

Not film related, but I didn't realize that shows in the middle of their first season could be nominated for things...Michael J. Fox, Masters of Sex and James Spader all getting nominations is...strange to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Spader, but I haven't seen enough of his character on The Blacklist to say that he deserves a win over, oh, I don't know, Spacey or Cranston. There are signs that he's got a good thing going, but really...I need a whole season.

As always, the best and most eclectic nominees of the year:

That's how it's classified at the Academy Awards as well. Because it's based on pre-existing characters.

Don't really agree with that approach but there is precedent.

Ah, I see. Yup, I guess it is based on pre-existing characters, but I agree that that alone shouldn't render it adapted screenplay.

I think the Best Actor category will be one to watch. This may be DiCaprio's chance to finally win an Oscar, but McConaughey has a great shot as well.

Inside Lllweyn Davis got shafted. No best picture, director, or a nod to Oscar Isaac? Boo. To be fair, Best Actor is stacked, it would be hard for me to say who's spot he should take. Actually, all the acting categories are uniformly strong.

Disappointed that Frances Ha got no love. Didn't really expect it, but had some hope for a screenplay nod or Best Actress for Gerwig (c'mon, Meryl Streep already has like, 200 oscars)

Wow... Some of this is just awful. Wtf is up with best actor category? No Hanks, fine. No Redford? I haven't seen the movie, so, whatever, I guess.

No Phoenix? Fuck. That. Shit.

Weak. No Inside Llewyn Davis or Before Midnight for best picture set the shitty tone early.

Best actor is good but seems a bit shallow, which is impossible considering the level of skill available. No Phoenix or Redford? Yeah, I think this might be Leo's year.

Before Midnight under adapted screenplay?

And holy shit, All Is Lost straight up won the Golden Globe for best score and didn't even get nominated.

Calling it now: American Hustle will be this year's LA Confidential. A shitload of nominations, but I don't see it winning much outside of JLaw, Academy darling.

Besides Bale, the Best Actor category is crazy strong.

Before Midnight had no chance at a BP nom. Llewyn Davis coulda been a contender, though I'm not surprised that Philomena popped in there.

Bale was great, there are just more deserving performances out there.

I very much disagree. It could be a result of me seeing portions of the movie close to 20 times at work. That being said, it's not one of his finer roles in a stacked year.

Can you imagine if this was actually made in the '70s? Throw Dustin Hoffman in that part and it's iconic. Fr shits and giggles:

John Travolta in the Bradley Cooper role
Candace Bergen in the Amy Adams part
Carrie Fisher as J Law
Gene Hackman in the Renner part

Most pundits actually are picking Hustle to take Best Picture now, as 12 Years a Slave is viewed as having underperformed (missing out on cinematography and original score noms).

I sure hope they're wrong. 12 Years really deserves to take the gold this year.

Most happy about Leo in Actor and The Great Beauty making the Foreign Language cut. Biggest disappointment is Stories We Tell (my #3 of the year) failing in Documentary Feature.

12 Years of Middlebrow Pap

I mean it's ok but I'd rather see American Hustle win because even though I haven't seen an O Russel film I've liked since Three Kings and haven't seen this one it at least looks to have something of a pulse.
