Brad Pitt won best actor for his performances in the baseball film "Moneyball" and Terrence Malick's cosmic drama "Tree of Life."

"Tree of Life" for best cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki

"Moneyball" for Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin's screenplay.

Meryl Steep was chosen as best actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming "The Iron Lady."

Jessica Chastain won best supporting actress for a trio of performances in "Tree of Life," ''The Help" and "Take Shelter

Albert Brooks earned best supporting actor for his against-type performance as a violent villain in the drama "Drive

Werner Herzog's 3-D documentary "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" was selected as best nonfiction film.

The financial industry thriller "Margin Call" won best first feature.

And the Iranian drama "A Separation" was picked for best foreign film.

The year's special award was given posthumously to the prolific Chilean-born filmmaker Raoul Ruiz, who died in August, shortly after the U.S. release of his acclaimed "Mysteries of Lisbon."

fair enough selection

there are just two that I could disagree with: Brooks was crap, I liked Drive a lot, but I had to walk out (second viewing) at the ending while his image was still on the screen, just way too much ham on that big screen

Steep playing Thatcher
the previews look like a bad 'Mad TV' sketch.

I'm on my phone and not going to type everything out, but Hugo won Best Picture and Best Director from the National Board of Review.

Suck it, Deep.

I don't know if I should be pleased that Mysteries of Lisbon got three mentions, or enraged that it didn't get more.

These people are supposed to be experts?

Cinema doesn't get much better, in this or any other year.

I'll make myself feel better by assuming many of them didn't get the chance to see it.

Yeah, well that's consensus for you. Kind of unavoidable, especially with a film that was inexplicably less widely seen, even in the arthouse world. Then again, I'll never understand the unbelievable praise for Winter's Bone in any circle, solid enough though it was.

Lame. I can't believe all these accolades Melancholia is getting.

That entire wedding sequence (like 40% of the film) was practically worthless. Generic handheld camera work.

At least they gave direction to Malick.

If there's a better list of nominations this year, I have yet to see it:

'A Separation,' 'Mysteries of Lisbon' Top International Cinephile Society Nominations | Filmmakers, Film Industry, Film Festivals, Awards & Movie Reviews | Indiewire

Mysteries of Lisbon with NINE.

The Best Picture lineup alone just incredible:

PICTURE
• Certified Copy
• Drive
• Hugo
• Margaret
• Meek's Cutoff
• Melancholia
• Mysteries of Lisbon
• A Separation
• The Tree of Life
• Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
• Weekend

If neither Rooney nor Lizzie are nominated tomorrow, I'm burning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters building to the fucking ground.

I saw A Separation last week, very good.
Margaret is coming to OC this week, still waiting for Weekend.

I also think that is a very good list.
Most likely better than the one we will get tomorrow.

Uniformly disgusting nominations across the board outside of the occasional glimmer of hope from Malick, Woody, or Tinker Tailor. And I don't think Tree really has much of a chance in winning best picture, so I guess I'm only rooting for Rooney Mara as far as the actual awards. Then pretty much Hugo for everything else since it's kind of the only studio film this year worth two shits that's gotten nominated for anything, generally speaking. Also lol the foreign language category. Once again one worthwhile film among four others nobody has ever fucking heard of.

Actually, I take back one thing. Aside from The Artist the category for cinematography this year isn't actually too off base.
