Game on, bitches. They've officially announced today that the film will called Skyfall, and that it's on schedule to come out next November. Sam Mendes is directing, which I know some people aren't too excited about but, I've read that he's a huge fan of the series and is very serious about making another classic Bond movie.

Javier Bardem is the villain:

Judi Dench's sexy ass is back:

Apparently their names are Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris. Hawt. Also, Ralph Fiennes is in the cast.

Let's go.

So they confirmed that title eh? Should piss off plenty, but probably won't cause as much of a 'huh?!!!' ruckus as the Quantum of Solace announcement did (for the record, I love the title QoS and it fit the movie perfectly).

Sam Mendes could go either way, he'll bring the pathos to be sure, but he's no action director. Also, while I didn't want it to be as highly connected as the last two, I'm sad to see them highlighting this as a standalone story, this new franchise could have been distinctive for it's continuity, now I'm kind of worried.

Also, I'm really hoping the title has nothing to do with some evil satellite program or anything of that nature.

Supposedly M plays a big role in this, but Dench has also said it'll be her last Bond film.

re: the title. People would've been bitching about Thunderball or Moonraker had the internet existed back then. Big deal.

Agreed that Quantum of Solace is a strong title, I liked it immediately.

I'm not with you, though, in your disappointment over Skyfall being a standalone story. I'm glad. And I can totally understand their decision. When this is released, it will have been four years since the last film, and a lot of people probably won't remember, or even want to remember, the continuity you mention, and they'll want something fresh. Plus, they wrapped up the whole Vesper thing nicely, so I don't really see why they'd need to keep that whole thing going. It would seem like an unnecessary retreat. Plus, Quantum of Solace wasn't quite as much of a critical or commercial success as Casino (I really liked it, btw), so that's another reason for a sort of fresh start.

The "new franchise" is already distinctive, because D-Craig is phenomenal in the role, and he's nothing really like any of the previous Bonds, and the films have fit really well in the new modern Bond universe, so I don't see a need to be worried.

I'd philip that Marlohe, if you get my meaning.

Nice!

Why the fuck would people get upset over the film's title?

Oh yeah, we're talking about the internet.

Well, you make it seem like a film's title is completely unimportant. I wouldn't say that's true. I think a title is at least somewhat important, and that goes for any piece of art, whether it's a movie, song, painting, novel, poem, whatever. You don't want a completely shit title. So, I can see people potentially getting upset over a title.

I personally wouldn't in this particular case, but I can see it.

We're talking about the hardcore Bond fanbase as well, remember the reaction to GASP! a blonde actor being cast? (Even though George Lazenby was blonde, :shh:)

Roger Moore as well, for the longest term as the character... unless that's who you mean instead of George Lazenby... who wasn't blonde :p

But yeah, there have been far less inspired and outright silly Bond titles to even well-lauded films. People are just always going to bitch about something.

Again, I said less connected than the previous two (which were essentially two halves of the same movie) but still, more linked than every other Bond regime. The Quantum organization shouldn't just disappear, especially since it was being set up as the new SPECTRE. I was disappointed to hear Jesper Christiensen (Mr. White) say he wouldn't return to the series, since his character is never resolved, he just disappears after the opera scene in QoS. I assume we will still have more continuity than previous times anyway though.

The difference in box office is negligible between CR & QoS, w/ QoS actually becoming the highest grossing Bond film ever in the US. But that's beside the point.

Also, Naoime Harris,. & Laz, hearing a Philip Marlowe pun today is really odd just a few hours after pulling out my stack of Raymond Chandler novels and deciding to give them a reread.

 thanks for that, Moore yes. And yeah, we're talking about a series that features movies with the names Octopussy and Moonraker.

Skyfall's a solid title, especially if the rumors of the flick being about a bunch of internal MI6 intrigue regarding M is true. Quantum of Solace is evocative, but is so oblique that it doesn't carry much meaning.

Naming a film Goldeneye when there's already a Goldfinger in the series was pretty fucking stupid.

As was Octopussy.

To be fair, it's the name of the computer gizmo in the movie and what Ian Fleming called his island home so there's at least two legit reasons there.

Octopussy is pretty lame no matter how you put it. There was no one in that movie with a sexy octopus or a lady with eight vaginas. Yet another case of falsity in advertising.

To be fair Maud Adams is a pretty snazzy lady, and she did have a pretty snazzy pet octopus. But otherwise I agree completely. I'm really even less a fan of of the just lazy-sounding semi-meaningless phrase-titles ala Tomorrow Never Dies, A View To a Kill, Die Another Day, etc

At least A View to a Kill relates to the plot somewhat and isn't as hollow-sounding as the other two. Plus, the Duran Duran track rules.

That reminds me, Octopussy's one of the few Bond features where the song title doesn't match up either. That being said, Rita Coolidge's "All Time High," Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" and Jack White & Alicia Keys' "Another Time to Die" rank pretty highly on my Bond song list... and Casino Royale's the only great flick in the bunch.

Still think Quantum is a great, lean well put-together film. Probably prefer it to Royale at this point.

Yes. And those films suck too. Next to them, Octopussy looks pretty damned good.

Well, she has been playing M for a long time, although it doesn't seem that long to me. This will be her 7th Bond film. Time flies.

I'd bet almost anything that she bites it near the end of this film, setting off some new personal vendetta for the next film. There's no reason not to use this departure to the series' advantage.

We are in a very, very small club. Whatever faults Forster (and the film) may have, I think his direction is a lot more interesting than what was going on in Casino Royale.

Still one of the best shots/scenes in the entire Bond series:

Yeah, the film as a whole doesn't have the kinetic or structural grace some of the Hollywood masters (De Palma, Fincher, etc) would bring to a project like this, but it's an effectively visceral, emotionally clear, and stylistically bold (for Bond) movie that has a very unique sort of shaggy identity to it. Would like to revisit it some time soon, actually.

I just watched Casino Royale last night. Planning on Quantum of Solace later on this week.

Is this the single most talented person ever associated with the Bond franchise?

Very likely. Good runners up as well. After that, mostly all I can come up with are actors - Louis Jourdan, Sophie Marceau, Mathieu Amalric, Benecio Del Toro, etc.
