I caught the show tonite, with George Carlin on the panel again. Just great. If you have HBO, you must watch this!

Here are the "New Rules" from last weeks show, 9/2, the first post-Katrina. I can post tonite's highlights when they are posted on the HBO site....

September 2, 2005

MAHER: All right, it's time for New Rules, everybody. All right, New Rule: Now that they've been hit by hurricane, the Alabama National Guard has to call up President Bush. Since he never really reported for duty back then, get out your chainsaw, Mr. President, it's brush-clearing time.

New Rule: If President Bush is going to exclusively play to military audiences, he must carry a golf club like Bob Hope and tell the Marines that the mess in Iraq is bigger than Dolly Parton's boobs. Why is there a troop shortage in Iraq? Because so many of them have to be here doing photo-ops with this clod. This guy has shown his ass to more servicemen than a bar girl in Thailand. I'm mad now!

New Rule: Tulips aren't flowers. They're some kind of gay onion.

New Rule: Stop saying that teenage boys who have sex with their hot, blonde teachers are permanently damaged. I have a better description for these kids: lucky bastards.

You know, I was once beat up after school, and believe me, I would gladly trade that pummeling for a session of oral sex with my French teacher - no matter how much his mustache tickled.

And finally, New Rule: Defenders of the war in Iraq must stop comparing it to the American Revolution.

DYSON: Thank you, thank you.

MAHER: Yes. The only thing the Iraqi leadership has in common with our founding fathers is that neither of them used deodorant. Now, the sight of Iraqis having a constitutional convention has put a lump in the throat of Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney, all of whom have compared the American patriots of 1776 to our soldiers in Iraq today, mostly because they're using the same equipment.

Let's just mention a few ways this analogy breaks down. One: the American Revolution was a home-grown rebellion fought with guerilla tactics against an occupying army of foreigners and mercenaries. Okay, that is exactly what's going on in Iraq. Oh, except for one thing: This time, WE'RE ENGLAND!

DYSON: Right, right, right.

MAHER: You need proof? The only people on our side? England. Uh-oh, wait a second, our teleprompter just went down. [he pulls script out of his jacket] That's why I always carry it with me.

DYSON: Bill, you are prepared.

MAHER: Isn't that something? I have to say, I was never a Boy Scout. I would have made a damn good one. No, no, I don't need your cards. I've got it right here.

DYSON: Bill, direct FEMA. Let him direct FEMA!

MAHER: The only people on our side: England. Turns out, home field advantage, very important in wars. Also, a huge difference when it came to the big, basic issues. Our founding fathers were all pretty much on the same parchment. It wasn't like Jefferson was for representative democracy but Adams and Madison were ultra-orthodox clerics chanting the Bible.

But Iraq, you know what Iraq is like? Okay, take Pat Robertson, put him in the desert...oh, that's good. The American Revolution was nothing like what's going on in Iraq. Our founding fathers didn't have thousands of years of bitter feuds and grudges between them. Franklin's people had not gassed Hamilton's people.

Our framers were a homogenous group comprised only of white, land-owning males. Today, we would hardly call that a constitutional convention. We'd call that a Republican Convention.

"We, the people" did not include women, blacks, gays or Indians. It took another 200 years to become "We, the Village People..." Or, as Ben Franklin said at the signing, "Who are we forgetting?"

But I have not lost hope for Iraq. The sons of Mesopotamia do have greatness in their history. And although the obstacles are many, there is one thing that binds the Sunni, the Shiite and the Kurd: they hate the f*** out of us.

All right, thank you very much. Michael Eric Dyson, Bradley Whitford, Mary Berry. You've been a great audience. I thank you for coming on a difficult night for us. Thank you very much.

I really liked it when Bill Maher did "Politically Incorrect" as that was a GREAT show ... :applaud:
As for this show, I can't "tune in" since I no longer have HBO ...

Like I said, one or two good lines from him. I just doubt I'd like him, though I wouldn't dislike him. Its not like I am saying negative things in an appreciation thread, I'm saying indifferent things in an appreciation thread, I see nothing to say that is wrong in the FAQ. I like plenty of things:

wow, I made the list! Granted you can't tell a lot from the post I made, but it's all I could find. You have to see it at least once, especially with the 3 member panel discussion. They do a remote or 2 (or 3) with guests. Last week they did one with Anderson Cooper of CNN while he was in LA. (or MS.). This week he had Kirt Vonnegut on. I hope they post the transcript on the HBO/Maher site...

I'd heard that he'd been fired from "Politically Incorrect" because, right after 9/11, he said something about how the people who flew the planes into the towers weren't cowards. And apparently a lot of people got really offended. I guess they must've missed the title of his show: "Politically INCORRECT".

But now he's on HBO and doesn't have to abide by any restrictions on what he can and can't say.

Anywho...

I saw that last night, too . Boy, George and Bill were not letting up on the administration at all! I actually felt kinda bad for the conservative guest, LOL...he had, like, no support whatsoever from anyone in that room.

Also...

...oh, my god... I liked the new rule on last night's show about bathroom attendants, too. I love the "New Rules" segment :D.

Yeah, the conservative guest had no support, but he didn't deserve any :madspit: Probably an upper class whitey... (no offense  )

New rules are always great. Glad someone else enjoys him as I do  for Angela!

What a shame !! :tsk:
That was the BEST talk show (next to Oprah) that I've seen in a long time. I really miss it !!

I never knew that ... apparently those people were "incorrect" in feeling so. I think alot of people just wanted "payback" as that show never got the recognition it deserved ... alot of people must
have disliked it, because the show's T.V. ratings were always bad ... :(

Totally agree !!

I  bill maher!

I have have his New Rules book that came out recently and it is absolutely hilarious. I still need to go pick up When You Ride Alone You Ride with Bin Laden.

My favorite line from his new rules segment from last night's episode was after he was listing things that had gone wrong during Bush's admin he said something like "and now we have the Bush family nightmare, helping poor people". I laughed so hard when he said that!

I looked and didn't see any clips available on his site, let me know when this is on HBO ... I can have a friend tape it for me, as I would really like to see it, then I can stop wondering if it's better than Politically Incorrect was ...

I never really watched politically incorrect, I was in high school then and not really interested, but I think that it's great that he's on hbo now and doesn't have to have a bunch of stupid celebrities on and can say whatever he wants (well if you have hbo that is  ).

they don't have video clips that i know of but i haven't really looked because i have dial up, but if you go to billmaher.com right on the front page they have audio of the new rules segment for that week.

I actually never really saw it all that much when it was on. I saw bits and pieces when my parents watched it, but at the time it was on, I was at an age where I was not as interested in political debates as I am now.

But yeah, it is a shame that a show gets cancelled because of something like that (he never said that those people's courage meant they were right in doing what they did, after all. He just said that they had the courage to fly a plane into a building. And he's right. You have to have no fear in you in order to do something like that. But you can have no fear and still have the actual event you are carrying out be utterly stupid).

Yeah, the conservative guest had no support, but he didn't deserve any :madspit: Probably an upper class whitey... (no offense  )

Heh. Yeah, I didn't agree with what he was saying, either. But I still noticed he wished he had at least one person on his side... Bet he wished that Scaroborough (sp?) guy was sitting at the table with him, 'cause that guy seemed most likely to side with him.

*Nods*. And ILuvLarryMullen, LOL, the title of that one book sounds funny! I may have to keep an eye out for those.

I remember a "New Rules" bit from...sometime earlier this year in which he commented on Constantine being voted off "American Idol". I can't remember now what all he said exactly-something about the fact that Constantine always seemed to be hitting on people through the TV or something along that line. I just know for sure that it was hysterical.

Also, MsMofoGone, you're in central time, right? Just look around for eastern times on some internet site or other, and you can go back from there to figure out what time it'd be on where you live, so that you could get your friend to get the show for you.

And again, considering that HBO has no restrictions on language or anything along that line, my guess is you shouldn't be disappointed with the show, that you may find it better than "Politically Incorrect".

Angela

just for you Angela

NEW RULES - April 29, 2005

New Rule: Rejected "American Idol" contestant, Constantine Maroulis must be destroyed. Because he kept trying to f*** me through my television set. I don't know why you singled me out, Constantine Maroulis, but I didn't fall for it. Sure, you may have the smoky, sexy voice of a rock-and-roll bad boy, the lean stature of a Greek god and a sultry gaze that makes my loins stir, but that doesn't make me gay!

There we go! I love that last sentence in particular :lmao: :D.

Thank you, Lila  :).

Politically Incorrect was one of the BEST late night talk shows on T.V. I loved all the guests who participated in being part of the panel. As for Bill's comment and why the show was cancelled ... it was totally stupid for that to happen as Bill has said rather strong comments about Presidents Bush and Clinton in the past and never got into trouble like he did regarding the comment about those airplane pilots on 9/11.

I'll probably like it just as much as Politically Incorrect.
Although as for fowl language ... I wouldn't think it would be necessary for him to go that far ...

Yeah, I know it sure got some good discussion going in my household (now you know where I got my opinionated nature from :p). Shame I didn't think to watch it more.

Yeah, really. Course, then again, people are used to hearing jokes about the president. They just didn't expect anyone to start making off-color remarks about something as big as 9/11, especially not right after it had happened, which, as I understand, again, was when the offending comment was made.

But meh.... People are interesting in regards to what offends them.

Heh, well, actually, he doesn't swear all that often, sorry if I gave you that impression. No, I was referring more to the fact that HBO doesn't care if people are politically incorrect about what the ysay. Hell, that channel's made a career out of shows and movies that tend to make the public go, "Oh, my god, did you see/hear what happened on such-and-such program/movie recently ?" But yeah, that's more what I was getting at in regards to language and whatnot-sorry if I confused you or something :).

Sometimes, he seemed really serious especially when Clinton had that fiasco with Monica Lewinsky.

If he was gonna EVER get 'busted' for what he said, it should have been during that matter ...

Yeah, I know what you mean, HBO is GOOD for not editing out
anything !!
Although, I didn't misunderstand you ... I just don't see why they need to show people doing or saying certain things, that are NOT necessary to make that program GOOD. :tsk:
I guess that is what cable is all about ...

I believe he was cancelled because of the advertisers, they were withdrawing their $$, probably claimed the people complained and they could not be associated with said show...

You are all really lucky that you can watch him....

We have (I guess) a German equivalent to Bill. His name is Harald Schmidt. He can say almost (well not almost - I think everything) everything he wants to.... it's just great... but the problem is he had first been on SAT. 1 which was great, he had a guest and it lasts about 50 min. netto. And now (after a 1 year break) he's on another channel and only twice in the week without a guest.... it's not the same... but he still is GREAT! :D
If anyone speaks german and has the chance to watch "Die Harald Schmidt Show" on ARD - don't miss it! ;)

love his show on hbo

they were also running his stand up special a year or so ago...i can't recall the name of it but it had some great political/religious incorrectness to it.

funny guy.

I tried finding this the other day, but it wasn't up online yet. Found that Irvine511 in FYM had posted this, so I'm posting it here as well...

Suggestion from Bill Maher last Friday night:

And finally, New Rule: America must recall the president. That's - that's what this country needs. A good, old-fashioned, California-style recall election! Complete with Gary Coleman, porno actresses and action film stars. And just like Schwarzenegger's predecessor here in California, George Bush is now so unpopular, he must defend his jog against ... Russell Crowe. Because at this point, I want a leader who will throw a phone at somebody. In fact, let's have only phone throwers. Naomi Campbell can be the vice-president!

Now, I kid, but seriously, Mr. President, this job can't be fun for you anymore. There's no more money to spend. You used up all of that. You can't start another war because you also used up the army. And now, darn the luck, the rest of your term has become the Bush family nightmare: helping poor people.

Yeah, listen to your mom. The cupboard's bare, the credit card's maxed out, and no one is speaking to you: mission accomplished!

Now it's time to do what you've always done best: lose interest and walk away.

Like you did with your military service. And the oil company. And the baseball team. It's time. Time to move on and try the next fantasy job. How about cowboy or spaceman?!

Now, I know what you're saying. You're saying that there's so many other things that you, as president, could involve yourself in ... Please don't. I know, I know, there's a lot left to do. There's a war with Venezuela, and eliminating the sales tax on yachts. Turning the space program over to the church. And Social Security to Fannie Mae. Giving embryos the vote. But, sir, none of that is going to happen now. Why? Because you govern like Billy Joel drives. You've performed so poorly I'm surprised you haven't given yourself a medal. You're a catastrophe that walks like a man.

Herbert Hoover was a shitty president, but even he never conceded an entire metropolis to rising water and snakes.

On your watch, we've lost almost all of our allies, the surplus, four airliners, two Trade Centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the City of New Orleans...Maybe you're just not lucky!

I'm not saying you don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. So, yes, God does speak to you, and what he's saying is, "Take a hint."

:applaud:  :applaud:

Oh, I gotcha now. I see what you were saying. Sorry for misunderstanding :). I do agree with you-I do think sometimes people put things in there just for the hell of it...but then again, what's seen as pointless to me may come across differently to someone else, so.... Meh. Everyone's got a different view.

Also, Lila, hehe, I'll second that . Didn't he also say something the other night about how he does love this country, it's just that the actions of a few people tend to drive him nuts? I wholeheartedly agree with that.
