You're right about the need for focus, deep, but I have to say that was easily one of the absolute best episodes of the series. I just loved the dramatic focus, and it felt so much more original and genuine than most episoodes this season, especially the intense action-oriented ones that often felt rushed! The only thing I didn't like was the brutality of the boxing, but, then again, my least favorite parts of Rocky were the gruesome boxing scenes.

I think Jamie Bamber is fantastic, and his arc in the season was wonderful (oh and that courtroom speech!)! I really enjoy the tension in that character and its portrayal between his vindictiveness and cruelty toward the cylon (who are really an expression of "the other" and just as human as the humans, but dehumanized the way we tend to our enemies) and his idealism toward the rest of humanity.

I much prefer him to the standard background jock character; I really felt that way in the beginning about Helo and Anders, but they've grown. I still hate Racetrack and am not a huge fan of Kat. The default militaristic jock setting for characters on the show, until or unless it is further developed, is the one main area of the show I'd criticize.

By the way, deep, now that I have your attention, please check out the last half of The 4400 Season 4, from the episode "The Marked"; it should blow you away or at least draw you in.

Apparently this is the latest fad question to be hitting the red carpet. They managed to track down the BSG gang for it, but check out the huuuuuge list of celebs they've managed to ask this question.

Who would win in a fight: A minotaur with a trident or a centaur with a crossbow?

To pick up on what I was saying about dehumanizing and homogenizing "the other", I'm reading a primary source document about a US policy official at the start of the Cold War. He's warning about fighting Communism in Western Europe by requiring that Marshall Plan aid be given only to governments that exclude local Communists from power. In his mind, all Communist members were part of a Soviet conspiracy -- and there was one in Eastern Europe -- and they could be dismissed as not proper citizens with honest hopes for bettering the plight of their fellow countrymen. They could just be ignored and isolated. This blind anti-Communism allowed nations getting financial and military aid throughout the Cold War to casually call any leftist protesting injustice a "Communist" and America helped kill them or supported brutal regimes in doing so, especially in Latin America. This is what I mean by dehumanization and homogenization of the enemy. It has gone on through history, and it hasn't served the interests of the larger humanity, and only caused needless suffering. This is happening again nowadays in the name of fighting a War on Terror (or a supposedly evil Iranian regime when there are other ways), except US officials are more conscious of these differences, but only seek to exploit the rhetoric for strategic gain. Then again, Truman exaggerated the Communist threat to get money to send to Europe, too.

This is Battlestar Galactica's gift to the world -- of making a convincing case of how this happens.

Where do they come up with these questions?

Because no one else has ever done so. Thank God for BSG!

We'd still be searching for Weapons of Mass Destruction if it weren't for BSG's careful philosophical problem solving.

Jinkies.

I think the next president should just make the writers of BSG his cabinet. All of them. I mean, why break up a good team?

Problems of the world=SOLVED.
