Anime, anyone?

I'm pretty sure if I don't watch Attack on Titan soon, my friends are gonna kill me.

I started watching Welcome to NHK, but I'm pretty sure that one is a little too weird for me.

I was watching Mushishi, but that's not streaming anymore :(. Such a shame, it was really good.

Neither is Clannad, which I never got a chance to finish. That's probably my favorite anime ever, at this point, though. I really should just buy it.

Glad this thread got bumped, I didn't even know it existed. My knowledge of anime is so limited outside of dbz and naruto and a couple other things. I've tried to get into a couple series via Netflix but honestly don't know where to begin.

Ahhhh, yeah, Mushishi is one of the greats.

BakaBT (private anime torrent tracker) is having a freeleech so I'm currently grabbing full HD series rips of Chihayafuru 1 and 2, Kaiba, Flowers of Evil, and K-On!. Will report back on shiiiiiit.

I'm not sure if there's much spectacular on netflix, but Hulu Plus is definitely worth the investment if only for a few months as they have a pretty great selection, most subtitles or at least options between dubbed and subbed episodes which is nice.

I have noticed Hulu has a lot more (and stuff I've heard of/would be more interested in watching), and subtitled > dubbed. I figured I'd watch Deathnote cos I read the manga, but the ads were driving me a bit nuts. I understand plus doesn't get rid of them? Or was my brother lying to me?

Yeah, the commercial breaks on Hulu Plus are honestly really irritating, especially since you're paying for it already. Buuuuut, the stuff they offer is huge, so I can't complain.

Welcome to the NHK is a great, great anime. The massive spikes in emotion that puncture the show make for some baffling moments, and I still find it difficult to believe that a 20-something shut in with an internet connection could be amazed by porn, but I love everything else about it. The animation, dialogue and characters are top notch.

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't end up giving up on it, after all. I was only 3 episodes in. I'd've missed out on a pretty great little show.

Started Attack on Titan. Loving it. The animation, especially, but the ridiculously over-the-top score is a treat.

Have a small list of shows I might be watching going:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
The Tatami Galaxy
FLCL

Added, of course, to the four I'm already watching.

Finished Welcome to the NHK last night. If anyone else watches it, please stick with it past the first three episodes. It starts weird, stays weird, but the emotional rewards are beyond worth it.

I'll make that one a priority. Sounds good.

Attack on Titan is good, but it's kind of like the Game of Thrones of anime. Big popular blockbuster, super serialized fantasy setting with major looming threats and intrigue. No character ever really feels safe. Hyper violent, gratuitous etc. But well plotted with good action. Also kind of dumb and shallow, but it's really entertaining. Obviously not a perfect corollary but they seem to occupy similar spaces in popular entertainment right now.

Those other four you list are some of the best ever though. FLCL is extremely dear to my heart. One of the most acute expressions of what it feels like for a boy to be ushered into the earliest stages of manhood. Also one of the most frenetic and exuberant displays of experimentation with animated forms themselves.

Bebop and NGE are stone cold classics of the golden age of anime. Real pillars of the medium. Must see. And The Tatami Galaxy takes up a similar place as FLCL did ten years ago, being one of the most innovative and substantial shorter series of recent years.

Also just finished Hyouka the other day. Man oh man. Great stuff. Maybe Kyoto animation's (Haruhi, Clannad, etc) best produced work to date. Gorgeous animation. Formally exciting within mundane settings and stories. But has some of the most fully realized and intricate characterizations and relationships I've come across in an anime series. It's also something of a detective story, but the mysteries are so quotidian and almost meaningless it's so wonderfuuuul.

Space Dandy is a lot of fun, my god. The two credits songs are going to be stuck in my head for eternity.

BOOBIES

Did it anyone watch the Sailor Moon Crystal premiere? The animation alone is worth it, but I could do without the voice actor for Usagi...I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I watched it, I was unaware it was going to be a complete re-boot, kind of disappointing that its just a flashier version of something that was already done (and not as good as the original imo). This is my wife's all time favourite anime so I'll keep watching it with her though.

They also remastered the 90s version, I understand?

I guess as it goes along, it's going to be more obvious, the differences between this version and the 90s as this is going to be far more faithful to the manga. At least that's what I'm being told.

Also, I'm ashamed to admit that I never watched the original Japanese version, so I didn't realize that was the same voice for Usagi as in the original , my friend was quick to point this out to me. I was quick to point out to him that I still can't find myself calling her anything but Serena, so this is going to take some time.

FLCL is the fucking shit. Strangest anime out there and it's a crowded field.

I'm doing to do a little reading on it, pick up the blu-ray and return to it in a couple of years.

Yeah, I...uh...I think I mostly got what was going on, but this is going to require some further reading, pretty sure.

Second episode of Sailor Moon was on today, as well. It's a fun trip down memory lane, but I honestly can't quite tell what the purpose of this is.

Watched enough attack on Titan a few weeks ago at work, I see what lance was getting at. It was ok, I probably won't watch the rest of what's on Netflix though.

I'm still only two or three episodes in, so not really far enough to make an opinion, but I was really enjoying it for the most part.

I understand that recycled scenes/images are a big part of anime, but I swear they show the kid's mom getting eaten like 345 times in the first 5 episodes.

And everyone having German sounding names was really throwing me off,

I saw the English version that aired on CN when I was a kid.

I suppose it wasn't a great translation, from what I'm told, but I thought they did a fair job, in retrospect. I recall reading the translated Manga at the time, as well, and found it super strange that her name was Rabbit, lol. Never could figure out if that was a nickname. Also, that dub tended to take out some of the stranger transformation dialogue.

I'm really having fun watching this, but I still kinda don't get the point.

The English dub was a major hack job and the season final especially with the showdown with Beryl is much darker and violent then what they showed in North America - I think they compressed something like a 3 episode arc down to 30 minutes, it was brutal.

I'm assuming this remake will show all that but I recommend the original Japanese version if you can find it.
