I will probably never see The King's Speech.

Which follows my recent pattern of blacklisting frontrunner awards films (Slumdog Millionaire, Million Dollar Baby) when my own choice appears to have no chance.

Sad, I know.

Did we create the best of 2010 thread yet?

I guess I'm ready.

The ones I've seen:

1. Black Swan
2. True Grit
3. The Social Network
4. Inception
5. The King's Speech
6. Winter's Bone
7. 127 Hours
8. Toy Story 3

Other English-language films that shit on most of them:
Scott Pilgrim
Unstoppable
Shutter Island
Somewhere
The Way Back
Blue Valentine

I've seen 5 of them:

1. Inception (9/10)
2. Black Swan (8/10)
3. Toy Story 3 (8/10)
4. The Kids Are Alright (7/10)
5. The Social Network (6/10)

I haven't seen much else from 2010, but I would probably place Shutter Island 4th. Fun film, but it didn't strike me as a particularly emotional or affecting one like it was apparently supposed to. Laz can do all the striking he pleases.

2010 that I have yet to watch (I mean, there's a lot more of course, every film that I don't know nothing about actually, but these are the ones I want the most):

True Grit
L'Illusionniste
Bal
Carancho
Biutiful
Winter's Bone
The Kids Are All Right
Animal Kingdom

I've only seen four of the BP noms .

1) Inception
2) Black Swan
(those two are actually close)
Not so much:
3) The Social Network
4) The Kids Are All Right

Which is not to say that I don't love all four of them, but I think the first two are incredibly strong.

3. The Social Network
4. Black Swan
5. The Kids Are Alright

Pretty big gap between 4 and 5, though I did enjoy The Kids Are Alright. I'd just call the other ones great films.

I will probably catch The Fighter at the $2 theatre. Toy Story 3 is something I guess I'll see at some point but I'm not buying it and don't rent or stream stuff so who knows when that'll happen. Winter's Bone I'll acquire in the near future.

Doubt I'll ever get around to 127 Hours, but maybe if only for James Franco.

The King's Speech can fuck right off.

I saw all 10 before the noms, actually caught all of them in theaters except The Kids are All Right.

The Social Network
127 Hours
Toy Story 3
Black Swan
Winter's Bone
Inception
True Grit
The Fighter
The King's Speech
The Kids Are All Right (had it's moments, but tries to hard, also, the kids might outshine the adults, and Julianne Moore is getting no credit despite giving what I thought was a way better performance than Bening.)

Liked or loved all of them.

Laz, you've been going on about how The Illusionist tackles themes better than Toy Story 3, and bagging on The King's Speech without even watching them? Come on. Oscar bait or not, The King's Speech is actually a good movie.

If by good, you mean aggressively mediocre, then yes, The King's Speech is that. If I want to see something that "showcases great acting," I'll go to the fucking theater. That being said, Mr. D'Arcy is quite good in it.

Most Anticipated 2011

The Grandmasters - Wong
The Tree of Life - Malick
Meek's Cutoff - Reichardt
The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate - Tsui
Super 8 - Abrams
Melancholia - Trier
In the Qing Dynasty - Jia
A Dangerous Method - Cronenberg
Headshot - Ratanaruang
Twixt Now and Sunrise - Coppola
Cave of Forgotten Dreams - Herzog
Haywire - Soderbergh
Outrage 2 - Kitano
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Fincher
Emma's War - Scott
Flying Tigers - Woo
Hugo Cabret - Scorsese
Pina - Wenders
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn - Spielberg
Showtime - Kwan

Bonus:

Luck (Pilot) - Mann

I really don't think Haneke, Hou or Kiarostami are going to get their new films out this year. Lot of other filmmakers I know have stuff in the works, but less defined release prospects. Anyway, these are (mostly) off the top of my head so I know I'm leaving a few out.

Really curious to see how this one turns out. Hopefully some of her pappy's aesthetic talents are hereditary.
