Actually preferential voting is a good way for independents and minor parties to exist within the system.
There have been times (speaking Federally) in the past when a government depended on the likes of Independents, Democrats and Greens to get stuff passed, and I'm not sure that's all bad. Very few bills are so urgent that they can't wait on a bit of fucking scrutiny.
