Let's see a show of hands,

How many people think we are the early stages of a global world war?

Yes, it may seem a bit crazy, but I think the US and Britain are trying to prevent what happened in the '40's (i.e. why it took them so long to get engaged...)

Osama ~ Adolf
Fundamentalists ~ National Socialists

I am just waiting for North Korea to get involved a la Japan.

This could get ugly folks.

Who would have thought a train staion in Madrid Spain would be bombed in the same year as a building in Riyadh Saudi Arabia all for the same cause?

I hope not, i think it's too early to tell. At this point I've been wondering if we're getting ourselves into another Vietnam, but now that I think about it I can worry myself even more ;)

I don't think this will be World War III.

I think the most likely situations for WWIII are:
- India/Pakistan war goes nuclear
- China attacks Taiwan/India (it's happened before)
- North Korea attacks South Korea/Japan/USA
- Arab nations join forces and attack Israel
- Israel invades an Arab nation

Wherever it happens, it'll happen in Asia.

Unfortunately, some of these hot spots don't have much free world trade. So they won't lose that much when starting a war. :|

The trade growth has significantly decreased the possibility of war in the Western world though.

We can never have a world war because everyone hates us and no one would take our side. If it escalates it will be the US vs. the middle east, maybe Israel would help out. I don't think Europe will fight at all. But I want it to be over soon.

BluberryPoptart:
Europe dosn't hate the US, they just hate what they describe as the arogance and foolishness of the current US government.

Of course Europe will be on the US side if the US is attacked but Europe dosn't like to support the US when they attack others.
Israel will be on the US side, because without the US Sharon is nothing.
And for the rest of the world? You simply have to pay for support

There is no possibility of world war today. There is no prospect of world war in the future. The nuclear option has prevented the stronger nations from declaring war on eachother and the threat from terrorists themselves is nowhere near as large as Nazi Germany was during WWII. I think we should also remember that Arab nations do not have the capacity to eliminate Israel. They tried in 48, 67 and 73 and failed with Soviet backing. If they were crazy enough to try again they would certainly be gunning for defeat.

I am an optimist about the world. We have been steadily moving towards a more peaceful globe in the last decade and provided we can sucessfully bridge the major gaps in development and economic integration around the world I think we can look forward to a future where humanity is united in the cause of peace and justice for all.

I think you are right but it seems to be a fairly thin line
at times I wonder if Europe isn't so consumed by an anti-american attitude that we view all of the US actions as guilty until proven as innocent

I think and hope we are still able to judge everything on its merrits though

al qaeda is being pursued throughout the middle east and south-east asia... tensions between israel and palestine are at an all time high with sharon saying that arafat was not off limits... iraq... afgahanistan... civil strife in thailand and indonesia... tensions between the kurds and the turks... disease and abject poverty has made africa a ticking time bomb... constant assasination attempts on musharraf leaves a nuclear power a well placed bomb away from potentialy falling into the hands of islamic fundamentalists... and we haven't even touched on korea, china-taiwan and pakistan-india...

if we aren't already in WWIII, we're a lot close than most would think...

Salome:

I think they are more anti bush than anti american, they think he is a liar and mr. bush dosn't behave like a honest man.
Many think Mr. Bush talks about christianity but starts war for money.
Of course this is bad for the credibility of the US and at the moment you're right, because of that some say "whatever he does, he is guilty until proven innocent"

Klaus you are naive to think it is all Bush. People have hated us for as long as I can remember, regardless of who is in power.

Not even close to this extent. Bush has exponentially accelerated the hate factor in his 4 years of office.

I love how people still believe that holding nuclear weapons brings peace. I think you're being a little too naive.

Then why is there such a big fuss over North Korea and Iraq (both presumably having nuclear weapons) and are there worries over the situation between India and Pakistan (known to have nuclear weapons)?
While a nuclear weapon was only used once (WW II, or rather, twice in that war) it does not automatically mean that it equals bringing peace.

In the context of world war and the willingness or desire of a superpower to engage in world war, nukes keep the peace.

Does this mean everyone should have one? No.

Well the most likely scenario is a full on 'war of civilizations' (Christianity vs Islam), something that a few lunatic commentators actually seem to welcome.

I think it's happening right now, so yes, I agree with Ouizy.

But 'World War' is a tad misleading as term. I expect either a nuclear holocaust or another Cold War, only worse.

Constant war is inevitable the further on we go, as oil WILL start to become scarcer. That is to say, incapable of fully meeting demand.

Maybe somebody has a magical energy cure waiting in the wings. I sure hope so.
