Normal What is the source of your self esteem?

From MSNBC:

Breast implants linked to suicide

Quote:
A series of studies has found a surprisingly high suicide rate among women who have had cosmetic breast implants, renewing the controversy about the procedure just as the Food and Drug Administration weighs whether to allow silicone gel implants back on the market.

THE LATEST study, published yesterday, found that Finnish women who had cosmetic implants were more than three times more likely to commit suicide than the general population in line with findings from a similar study of Swedish women and one of American women conducted by the National Cancer Institute.

FDA DECISION PENDING
The three studies also found that the overall death rate for women with implants was the same as or lower than for the general population, suggesting that the implants themselves were not causing illness, as once feared. But all three found that the suicide rate was significantly, and at this point inexplicably, higher than expected.

Some researchers say the high suicide rate reflects the psychological makeup of women who seek implants that as a group they are more likely to have psychological problems than the general population. But others say the high suicide rate is a function of the difficulties and pain that sometimes occur years after the surgery.

I wish women would start to realize how unhealthy all of these elective cosmetic procedures can be--unhealthy for women's bodies, spirits, and relationships. Most guys I know say that they'd prefer smaller, natural breasts to bigger fake ones. But that shouldn't even matter--breasts are beautiful in all sizes and shapes, and unfortunately that message isn't being sent (or if it is, it's not being received) in American society.

As a male and breast lover. I have been on a crusade for the past 10 years trying to spread the word of the greatness of not just small(er) breasts, but natural ones as well. I have sat and debated with women at length trying to get them to reconsider surgeries they have either already scheduled or set their mind to do. Sadly I have had little to no success. I don't understand it. I don't see the attraction to fake breasts and I certainly don't understand why women feel the need to get huge ones when their breasts are fine how they are.

I don't believe all cosmetic breast surgery is wrong. I would understand a "breast lift", a breast reduction, or a small breast augmentation in some rare cases.

Breasts are beautiful, don't ruin them!!!

I wish women wouldn't get these procedures they don't need either. Surgery is drastic stuff, and I'm only going to get the stuff I absolutely need for my health and safety.

2 pple gettin on my hooters at the moment is Jordan and her enemy Jodie Marsh

all the argue about is how one has better t*ts, body, how the other is trashier, etc.

and Jordan has gone too far with her bust..........she had the f*cking opportunity to make her life, but chose this?

Has ANYONE heard the 'Breast speech' by Greg Kinnear in the film 'Auto Focus?'

he speaks for 95% of men!

I think self esteem begins w/ your parents. If they don't do the proper job instilling it, it's tough the rest of your life to try to feel good about yourself.

Making women feel inferior makes a lot of money for certain people, and until that changes, nothing else will.

I think it's also definitely possible that the chemicals in implants could alter brain chemistry.

well, if you base your self-esteem on your looks, they fade, as does your self-esteem. (god, i hate that word, it's used WAY too often at school) it seems obvious to me. to quote Dorian Gray in The Picture of Dorian Gray: 'When I find that I am growing old, I shall kill myself.' isn't that proof enough that peole who put importance on looks are suicidal by nature?

Years ago, I represented the company that is trying to re-introduce silicone implants in the US. The legal battles involved many "junk" claims of silicone related health effects. Most of the claims were invented by lawyers and their paid specialists.

This is central to the elective plastic surgery industry.

I would not want my wife to get implants.

This reminds me of a story a few years ago, where a 16 year-old girl in England was getting breast implants for her birthday from her parents. She said, and her parents agreed, that having bigger breasts would be the only way for her to be successful in the world, and she used women like Pamela Anderson and a few others as proof that bigger breasts means respect and success in life.

Its so sad that some girls think their whole world could fall apart around them if they don't have a bigger chest size. They have to have someone to tell them they are worth a lot more than their chest size.

That's pathetic. I'm so glad I wasn't raised that way.

Padded bras are really the way to go...I fully endorse them. They are much cheaper and healthier.

My freshman year in college, I was told by a male friend tht I didn't get any dates because I was too flat chested and I should look into getting silicone implants. Stuff like that can have a really painful impact on a girl--I had felt pretty confident about myself until then, I was never very focused on the way I looked. You don't think about how silly a comment like that is, you just obsess about it. And there isn't much in American society to tell you to value your intelligence or sense of humor more.

Now, after two years of Victoria Secret's artificial enhancements, I still don't get any dates, but I know now it is my scathing personality and intelligence. And I feel better about myself than I ever have.

A read a similar story in Houston Magazine (it was the cover story). Parents graduation gift for their daughter - implants.

The parents probably thought they were doing a good thing and really involved in their daughter's life.

One of my best friend's has implants. She got them only for cosmetic purposes and the attention she gets from guys because she has fake breasts and is fake blond amazes me. Apparently most men are attracted to fake boobs and fake blonds. She would like to have more cosmetic surgery done such as lipo, nose job, face lift, etc. I don't know what to tell her when she goes on about this because she will not listen to the "you are pretty just as you are." She has also told me I should consider getting lipo.
