From what I heard, there were 2 advisors pretty much in the same role. One wanted to focus more on the primary and one was already looking nationally. They didn't see eye to eye on the direction of the campaign in that way.
 
Conflict is a universal aspect of organizations. It's not necessarily bad, it's just not pretty. Sometimes two or more people can't work together and it's best for one of them to split rather than continue to cause friction.
 
It is very similar to what happened with Perot.

If I am recalling correctly there were major conflicts between the grassroots people who got things rolling and the people who came in later to manage his campaign (ie David gergen). In the Perot case, David gergen left. In this case, it appears that the Gore people are now taking over and the grassroots people are leaving.
