Even the White House is getting in on the humor:

White House Finds Humor in Hunting Mishap

Quote:
The White House has decided that the best way to deal with Vice President Dick Cheney's shooting accident is to joke about it.

President Bush's spokesman quipped Tuesday that the burnt orange school colors of the University of Texas championship football team that was visiting the White House shouldn't be confused for hunter's safety wear.

"The orange that they're wearing is not because they're concerned that the vice president may be there," joked White House press secretary Scott McClellan, following the lead of late-night television comedians. "That's why I'm wearing it."

The president's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, took a similar jab after slapping an orange sticker on his chest from the Florida Farm Bureau that read, "No Farmers, No Food."

"I'm a little concerned that Dick Cheney is going to walk in," the governor cracked during an appearance in Tampa Monday.

Just in: One of the bb's from the shotgun is now lodged in Whittington's heart. It's now caused atrial fibrillation (a not uncommon arrhythmia that is treated with various medicines & techniques, but can ultimately lead to a stroke, among other things). The A-fib has also caused a minor ischemia/infarction (heart attack).

Lovely.

sure, it is all a big joke.

Kind of like when the President made his jokes about looking for WMDs under the table and behind the drapes.

Quote:
Bush's Iraq WMDs joke backfires

At a black-tie dinner for journalists, Mr Bush narrated a slide show poking fun at himself and other members of his administration.

One pictured Mr Bush looking under a piece of furniture in the Oval Office, at which the president remarked: "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere."

After another one, showing him scouring the corner of a room, Mr Bush said: "No, no weapons over there," he said.

And as a third picture, this time showing him leaning over, appeared on the screen the president was heard to say: "Maybe under here?"

Yes, aren't canned hunts lovely things? It takes a big, strong man with a really big gun to blow away a tame animal who isn't afraid of humans.

Canned hunt?

Have you ever been quail hunting?

It is not shooting fish in a barrel - it does take some skill.

Cheney has gone on canned hunts before.

And what skill does it take to shoot an old man in the face.
and then cover it up.

and slowly have it leak out that there is 'shot' in his heart and he suffered a heart attack.

i guess they had to let that information out
in case this guy takes a turn for the worse

move over Arron Burr??

Dick Cheney is not now, nor has he ever been, subject to laws created by mere human beings.

I haven't--it's not my cup of tea. But this wasn't "normal" hunting where the birds are wild and have the desire/opportunity to evade or escape. This place hand-raises the birds so they aren't afraid of humans. Then they let them out of a cage once the hunters are in place. Even if they wanted to fly away (which they don't because they have been raised not to view humans as any kind of threat), they don't have much of a chance. Texas has a lot of places like this, not just for birds.

Even a lot of pro-hunting groups oppose places like this as unsportsmanlike, because there's no skill involved. Paying customers are a lot of times guaranteed a kill.

Normal

Oh no, now this has become very serious

AP

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot lodged in his heart and he had "a minor heart attack" Tuesday morning, hospital officials said. The victim, Harry Whittington, was immediately moved back to the intensive care unit for further treatment, said Peter Banko, the administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial in Texas.
