I don't think America has been a country that rewards initiative and ambition for quite some time. We are, after all, the nation that put Dubya into the White House not just once, but twice. (I guess you could say Dubya represents a twisted kind of initiative and ambition, but I'm sure it's not the kind you had in mind).

There's always been an anti-intellectual bent here as well.

Well -
if you are an angry, old bigoted, white senior - you got column A

and if you are a snotty nosed, whiny little, naive idealist - you got column B

That's another thing that frustrates me. I hear all the Republicans on TV saying how they want someone who can unite the country and reach across the aisle, but when the fact that McCain has done just that comes up, they seem to condemn him

Quote:
Steve Scully: This is a political question in terms of how he gets the nomination, but just from what you have seen, how much support do you think he has among the base of the Republican Party?

Roberta McCain: I don’t think he has any. I don’t know what the base of the Repub–maybe I don’t know enough about it, but I’ve not seen any help whatsoever.

Scully: So can he then go on and become the nominee of this party?

McCain: Yes, I think holding their nose they’re going to have to take him.

Scully: Can you explain?

McCain: Well, everything they’ve done and said. … Now I’m really popping off, but he worked like a dog to get Bush re-elected. …He’s backed Bush in everything except Rumsfeld. Have you heard other senators and congressmen backing Bush over eight years? Find me it–give me a name. I’ve not seen any public recognition of the work that he’s done for the Republican party.

Mitt's stock is going up!

Re:the darker mood among voters.

Americans, in general, seem quite jaded these days. I notice it mostly in kids (I see a huge difference between the kids I teach out here and the American kids I encounter during my summer visits to the Mainland), but it appears to be true of many adults as well.

That jaded cynicism will have an effect on the election, and I fear it won't be a good one.
