You could suspect both 'messages' of carrying sexist overtones without being unreasonable, though I think it's harder to argue against that perception in the case of the McCain ad. Paris Hilton=Tiresomely Omnipresent is a less loaded association than Hilton/Spears=Wanton, Incompetent Basket Case.

I don't see the racial analogy you're suggesting at all.

My analogy was only in response to Irvine's
a clean, articulate black man to sexually available white women

I don't believe McCain's ad was either
it is just referring to people that are celebrities
people that are famous or popular without a lot of accomplishments.

Obama has remarked similarly about himself.

i can think of more famous people than Britney or Paris, and people who are more current than Britney or Paris.

but they're not skinny white blond women who appear to have little between their heads.

ask yourself about that Harold Ford Jr. attack ad.

I don't know about the Harold Ford thing, but this is really silly. Britney and Paris have virtually no accomplishments. You may think that Obama is not ready to be President, but he has accomplished more in his life than most people we know. I don't recall him ever saying that he hasn't accomplished things in life.

The ad made McCain look like a fool. When Kathy Hilton is lecturing you on being frivolous, the bottom has really been scraped. But I guess when you max out in donations to McCain, you can have him $hit on your kids too.

Exactly... 'famous and popular without a lot of accomplishments' is certainly the obvious surface message and the main one, but you can't evaluate what subtexts might or might not be present without getting into questions of why these particular choices and not whichever other ones.

I thought that ad was crap, and it may have turned the election in Tenn.

Ford seemed to be a rising, capable politician.

And let's not kid ourselves, Tenn is a RED state, in the South.

but the Ford ad and the Obama ad are quite different.

First thing we all have to admit

is that Obama was first to reference himself compared to Paris Hilton. check

second thing
is that Britney is getting a bum rap from all you Obama supporters check

she has quite a list of accomplisments

^ Actually that's not inconsistent with what I was saying at all, and I'm not sure it's inconsistent with what Irvine was saying either.

Ok we've jumped the shark. We did it in 2004 when people suddenly started researching 30 year old typewriters to see if Bush's TANG record was legit, now we're researching Britney Spears' accomplishments to see if she compares to Obama.

However I agree with your point deep that Britney actually has been a hard worker. Paris is the only one of the two who is famous merely for being famous.

but the Ford ad and the Obama ad are quite different.

i agree that the Obama ad is far subtler than the Ford ad, which was quite brazen. but i think both are playing off the same below-the-surface fear held in many of these red states, fears written about in, say, To Kill A Mockingbird.

it's not so much that the ad is implying the subtext, like the Ford ad did, but that it is suggesting the subtext.

bottom line is this: in some parts of the country, juxtaposing images of a black man with images of young white women is going to set off certain knee-jerk reactions. for some, it's the unfounded fear of black men wanting to rape white women (one of the primary "motivations" over centuries of lynchings), or it might be the fear of a black man getting all "presumptuous" and luring white women away from other white men. and Rove knows this. and Rove will use this.

I do get what you are saying here

but if seeing a black man with white women bugs you
then the odds are, you already were not going to vote for Obama

She attends parties on a nearly nightly basis for a fee. That's hard work. You try staying up until 5 am every night.

Does she also make handbags or is that just the sister?

I find it odd that deep is so willing to jump on just about everything he considers to be a flaw of Obama's but is going to great lengths to defend McCain about an ad that most Republican pundits denounced.

In this forum, it seems that 75-80 % do not take completely objective views at how these things are playing out.

I suppose if I spent time on a "right" leaning forum
I would be countering flawed Obama critiques

but this might get you to get off your duff and vote for the other guy, not the uppity nigra.

A work in progress

we still got that damn little Obama flag on the podium

In this forum, it seems that 75-80 % do not take completely objective views at how these things are playing out.

Would you include yourself in that group?

I remember you were quite quick to jump all over Obama for cancelling the troops visit, then it turned out to be a big, fat McCain lie. So I'm not sure that you're countering subjectivity from anywhere objective to be honest.

22% think McCain's "celebrity" ad was racist. 53% think Obama's stupid "dollar bill" remarks were racist.

Rather unsurprising, given that Obama's comment directly addressed race whereas any invoking of it by the McCain ad was indirect.

Yeah, I have a hard time taking a poll seriously when the website is flooded with Republican ads(two McCain ads and Newt newsletter ad) and an 'Obama Exposed' advertisement.

Personally I don't think the ad was racist. Childish? Yes Racist? No

I also don't Obama's comment was racist. But it shouldn't have been made in the context of McCain and Bush, are others on the right saying it? Yes, naming names was wrong.

I agree
I don't think it was racist either

but it did involve race
and one could call it using the 'race card' for advantage
as silly as that sounds ( I guess that is why people would lump it in the racist category)

most people think the race card is only played against minorities

and went the 'so called' race card is played for advantage
it does not get me too riled up

(as when Obama said , they are going to tell you to be afraid of me, they are going to say, He's black)

because there are probably 100+ times it has been played the other way

The biggest problem I had with that comment was a strategic one--it's almost always a bad idea to level allegations of prejudice against an opponent in a way that implicates your audience in the scenario.

I'd predict more backlash from the accusations over that Paris Hilton ad being subversively racist, from moderate undecided white folks, than outrage of some kind about it actually being racist.

So, no matter what the intentions were it's a losing issue for Obama.

He needs to avoid causing resentment about race at all costs.

What would be the purpose anyways?
The purpose of the Harold Ford ad was to get the Bubbas to 'come back home'. Obama ain't gonna win many of those minds, ever.

Did anyone see the columnist who mentioned the 'phallic' symbols in the ad?
Among the most absurd things I've ever read or seen (actually I saw the columnist on TV and they had excerpts).

If it takes the intellectuals to arduously point out all the symbolism, then what kind of person who is considering Obama is going to say to themselves "That black boy is after our white women!!!" And who among these supposed intellectuals is going to argue that a person like that would ever consider voting for Obama in the first place.

More maverickism from McCain. Here.

HUNTINGTON, W. Va - Republican John McCain appeared to back down on Tuesday in his dispute with his opponent Barack Obama over tire pressure.

Last week in St. Louis, Obama told an audience that steps such as inflating tires to the correct levels could make a difference when it comes to conserving fuel.

Cue gleeful mockery from McCain. Obama was naive, inexperienced and not talking straight to the American people about energy, he said.

His campaign went further, distributing to reporters tire gauges engraved with the words “Obama’s energy plan.”

Predictably, Obama hit back calling McCain’s mockery “ignorant,” arguing his plans were being misrepresented and saying that experts backed his call over tire pressure. Equally predictably, McCain’s camp hit back.

This is what Obama said, and it's truly about time somebody articulated the GOP's pride in being ignorant:

"So I told them something simple," Obama said. "I said, 'You know what? You can inflate your tires to the proper levels and that if everybody in America inflated their tires to the proper level, we would actually probably save more oil than all the oil we'd get from John McCain drilling right below his feet there, or wherever he was going to drill.'"...
"So now the Republicans are going around -- this is the kind of thing they do. I don't understand it! They're going around, they're sending like little tire gauges, making fun of this idea as if this is 'Barack Obama's energy plan.'

"Now two points, one, they know they're lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they're making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant."

Well, then turns out McCain realized he was wrong. Again.

The surprise came during a telephone town hall meeting McCain held on Tuesday with voters in Pennsylvania.

“Obama said a couple of days ago says we all should inflate our tires. I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it,” McCain said.

But hey, I guess handing out tire gauges is productive. It's what the voter wants to see. Purple band-aids, anyone?

And who among these supposed intellectuals is going to argue that a person like that would ever consider voting for Obama in the first place.

it's all subliminal. it's highly calculated, and intentionally subliminal.

lots of thought goes into these things.
