To The Keeper

And here we were waiting for Rove to be sitting in a prison cell by now
It now appears that the person most responsible for the end of Ms. Plame’s CIA career is Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson chose to go public with an explosive charge, claiming — falsely, as it turned out — that he had debunked reports of Iraqi uranium-shopping in Niger and that his report had circulated to senior administration officials. He ought to have expected that both those officials and journalists such as Mr. Novak would ask why a retired ambassador would have been sent on such a mission and that the answer would point to his wife. He diverted responsibility from himself and his false charges by claiming that President Bush’s closest aides had engaged in an illegal conspiracy. It’s unfortunate that so many people took him seriously.

Buried in this editorial is the fact with the most far-reaching implications: that Joe Wilson falsely claimed that he had "debunked" White House charges that Saddam had been trying to buy uranium in Niger. It turns out that Saddam had been trying to buy uranium, so that Iraq could build nuclear weapons.

Thus, it turns out that the White House stands vindicated on one of its key arguments for going to war against Saddam: that this thug and his regime were actively pursuing a WMD program. So...where are all the headlines about this? Except for this editorial admission by the Post (which implies that the newspaper had been taken in, rather than played a key roll in disseminating the lies), where are the media mea culpas, retractions, and apologies for many months of false, anti-Bush "conspiracy" stories? Don't hold your breath.

I think that post-hoc justifications are an interesting psychological phenomenon.

That second quoted blog sounds interesting, but reading on:

But a question remains: What motivates this seething, disproportionate hostility toward President Bush and his administration?

I firmly believe that, at root, the hatred arises because the left (including the media left) reflexively opposes all those who stand up for America, American values, and American interests -- even if only symbolically.

Yes, even the Washington Post has recognized Joe Wilson for the self-serving charlatan he is, and yet another left-wing conspiracy theory has been debunked.

What's amusing about all of this is that Republicans more than succeeded in spinning this into blaming the victim.

What we forget about all of this is that, for all the Bush Administration bluster about holding the person responsible for leaking her identity, it took a full three years for former deputy secretary of state, Richard Armitage, to actually admit that he was the one responsible for blowing her cover.

If this was such a non-issue, as this article whimsically implies, why wait three years to admit it? Because, as usual, the GOP waited until it could confuse this situation to the point that nobody cared anymore. And that's the case: nobody cares. By that notion, the GOP can claim victory through apathy--with an administration so wholly corrupt that nobody is altogether surprised anymore when its corruption rears its ugly head.
