Time Names Bush: 2004 "PERSON OF THE YEAR"

I wouldn't be alarmed. Time's Person of the Year isn't always a good guy, or at least, you don't necessarily earn that honor by doing good things. It's still who is the most "notorious" person of the year, the one who stirred things up in whatever way, good or bad. I believe Hitler was a Time MOTY. And one year, Arafat was either the MOTY or a runner-up.

I'm not concerned by this "running dog" (as the Chinese Communists used to say--the Little Red Book has some great expressions:) worshipful article...words mean nothing,

After all, Arafat was given the Nobel Peace Prize, and that has got to be the most dubious Prize ever given in the Commitee's history. In retrospect. 10 or 15 yrs from now, when we are deep in the Spcial Security hell, (he wantto borrow 1 to 2 TRILLION dollars to finance the switch from Gov;t funds to private accouts? Where do you get 1 trillion? How are we going to sellTHIS ONE overses, for surely we can't come up with that money ourselves?) and maybe a recession or mini-depression as a result of this freaking War draining our country's rescources far beyond out ability to cope with it..

Then we'll see how much a few paltry mag covers means. Affter all, the people turned against their Republican darling Hoover in the end.

Not surprising to me... I had a hunch Bush woyld get it b/c he did have the most impact in the World/ US this past year. Love him or hate him one can't deny that he's had an impact. I mean look at the past winners.

Exactly. I'm trying to think of someone who I honestly and objectively believe has had more of an impact (good or bad) this past year and my mind is blank.....

I'd love to see NEWSWEEK outsell TIME on the newsstands this week. They've got Barack Obama on the cover, and I bought it for that reason.

I got my new issue of Newsweek today in the mail. Looking forward to reading about Obama!

I read the little interview with him that Rolling Stone magazine had recently.

I like him. He seems like a really smart, cool, common sense kind of guy  . 'Tis good that he won.

Being Mature?

Why is it in the beginning of this thread there is all sorts of Bush-Bashing- then one person (with the opposite view) "dishes" it back and it is considered immature?

Maybe there's a difference in speaking criticisms about a president and calling a whole group of people bleeding heart demo-communists.

I mean "communists" who still calls people "communists".

I'm sorry about that, how's this:

bleeding-heart-special-interest groups that elect "Hanoi John" as they're party candidate.

I have no problem with people stating they like Bush. None whatsoever. They've got their reasons and that's fine.

But when they stereotype all non-Bush supporters, it kinda bugs me. Especially considering that I know Bush supporters get upset if someone stereotypes them.

Do you have any idea the amount of "slop" that gets thrown on the Bush-supporters on this site?

So your saying that the non-Bush-supporters are nice and quiet/respectful? Give me a break. Get real.

The democrats are the first one's to bitch and moan. I am surprised they have not yet sent a legal team to investigate this site.

Nevermind...this is shit.

I never said that at all-I don't know where you're getting that impression. I know full well that there's disrespect on both sides, and I don't agree with either side acting immature. I've gotten after people on both sides before for acting silly about something, for stereotyping or treating people in a way that I know full well they themselves wouldn't want to be treated.

And yes, Democrats will moan about things, no doubt about that, but Republicans can do it, too. If Kerry'd won the election and been named person of the year, I know some Republicans would moan about that. BOTH sides are guilty of that kind of thing.

I don't see how he's much more than a liberal media star. He seems like a positive guy overall, but he hasn't done much of anything yet, and he's already the poster boy for the dems.

I'm not a Bush supporter, but I'm not aware that I've thrown dirt on either Bush himself or Bush supporters. If I have I've f:censored:d up big time. I do not hate Bush, I simply don't agree with his agenda, so yes, I voted for Kerry. It's not philosophically consistent to consider Kerry or his supporters communists. A communist is a Marxist-Leninist who believes in using the force of the military in enforcing the laws, which include making it illegal to criticize the government. This doesn't describe Kerry's political philosophy at all, those of us who voted for him believe in democracy, elections, and everything like that that other Americans believe in. Communists don't believe in democracy or elections. Look at the political mess in Ukraine right now. The government tried to screw the opposition by poisoning their candidate. This is a practice that was used during Soviet rule to punish dissidents in the old Soviet Union, and some people in that part of the world don't want to let go of the Soviet system. This would get a U.S. president impeached. It got Ukraine another election because to the credit of their people they showed they weren't going to take this :censored: without a fight. Just calling people names doesn't make any sense, it helps to know just what the name really means.

Yes, to a certain extent Barack Obama is now a liberal media star. He hasn't started his Senate career, but he will in a matter of weeks, and we will be watching what he does with hope. He's the kind of guy who gives us liberals hope these days. You've got to find hope somewhere, and that's where alot of ours is.

Dear Time Editors:

My son, Spc. Casey Sheehan was killed in Iraq on 04/04/04. This has been an extraordinary couple of weeks of "slaps in the faces" to us families of fallen heroes.

First, the Secretary of Defense—Donald Rumsfeld—admits to the world something that we as military families already know: The United States was not prepared for nor had any plan for the assault on Iraq. Our children were sent to fight an ill-conceived and badly prosecuted war. Our troops were sent with the wrong type of training, bad equipment, inferior protection and thin supply lines. Our children have been killed and we have made the ultimate sacrifice for this fiasco of a war, then we find out this week that Rumsfeld doesn't even have the courtesy or compassion to sign the "death letters"—as they are so callously called. Besides the upcoming holidays and the fact we miss our children desperately, what else can go wrong this holiday season?

Well let's see. Oh yes. George W. Bush awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to three more architects of the quagmire that is Iraq. Thousands of people are dead and Bremer, Tenet and Franks are given our country's highest civilian award. What's next?

To top everything off—after it has been proven that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, there were no ties between Saddam and 9/11 and over 1,300 brave young people in this country are dead and Iraq lies in ruins— what does Time Magazine do? Names George W. Bush as its "Man of the Year." The person who betrayed this country into a needless war and whom I hold ultimately responsible for my son's death and who was questionably elected, again, to a second term, is honored this way by your magazine.

I hope we finally find peace in our world and that our troops who remain in Iraq are brought home speedily—after all, there was no reason for our troops to be there in the first place. No reason for my son and over 1,300 others to have been taken from their families. No reason for the infrastructure of Iraq to be demolished and thousands of Iraqis being killed. No reason for the notion of a "happy" holiday to be robbed from my family forever. I hope that our "leaders" don't invade any other countries which pose no serious threat to the United States. I hope there is no draft. I hope that the five people mentioned here (and many others) will finally be held responsible for the horrible mistake they got our country into. I hope that competence is finally rewarded and incompetence is appropriately punished. These are my wishes for 2005.

This isn't the first time your magazine has selected a questionable man for this honor—but it's the first time it affected my family so personally and so sorrowfully.

Cindy Sheehan

:( That is very sad I offer my sincerest condolences, but at the same time, for every mother as angry and bitter as this, there's probably 100 soldiers who feel what they're doing IS right and purposeful. I'm not saying I agree with the mission, but every soldier I met has been willing to give 110% (including one whose convoy was bombed and he was injured with shrapnel and wanted nothing more than to recover and get back to Iraq).

I'm sure they try to keep that in their mind, otherwise they might as well shoot themselves. While in theater (God I've always hated that term as if it was acting and like While E Coyote they will miraculesly (sp) be reborn for the next scene), however we've heard a lot of returning soldiers say something very different. Just go to the site for returning Iraq war vets.

Yeah, when you think about it, it's most important that the soldiers themselves feel positive about what they're doing. We are able to protest against things the government is doing that we don't agree with because we've had people like this willing to fight the forces of tyranny to keep the damn tyrants from running all over our rights, and I certainly appreciate what they are doing even if I don't approve of the actions of their superiors.

We've heard a lot of liberals reporting about any soldier they find with a gripe and presenting this as the average view of soldiers in the field which is pure garbage.

My best friend who is a Captain in the Marine Corp on his second tour of duty there knows that for a fact.

As he often tells me, the liberal media will never tell you about the time HE flew combat escort for a medical helicopter carrying an Iraqi insurgent/terrorist, who was in a coalition prison, with a liver problem to a coalition hospital in Baghdad. Combat escorts are necessary for medical helicopters because they are a #1 target of insurgents.

Here they were risking their lives for this one terrorist, so he could have his liver problem treated by the best medical doctors in the world. Do the media report this? No, lets spend hours on what a few individuals did at one prison and present this as what the average serviceman or servicewomen in Iraq does.

I agree. The ones I know made a conscious choice to join the military and know what dangers are possible. Of course, these guys don't feel the need to blab about it all over national TV b/c like they say, it's their job and their duty, just like I don't feel that the media would have or should have any interest in me going into the office and fixing computers all day long. They do what they've sworn to do and either go back to Iraq or move on with their lives. I don't really know how I feel about this war; my opinion tends to change every time I learn something new, but If the majority of our soldiers don't feel right about what they're doing in Iraq, than we have a problem with our military, not our mission.
