It reminds me of that thread we had a while ago here asking what the difference between the male and female posters on FYM was.

Just an observation.

I just popped back in this thread for the first time since I last posted here several days ago. I got a good laugh out of your post because it's so true! When I made my last post here I thought "aw, fuck it, this is pointless" and left. When I saw it today I couldn't help but be amazed that this thread was still going.

Hastert Wants 'Christmas,' Tree not Vacation Tree
Nov 29 9:46 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON

If it's a spruce tree adorned with 10,000 lights and 5,000 ornaments displayed on the Capitol grounds in December, it's a Christmas tree and that's what it should be called, says House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Hastert, R-Ill., in a letter to the Architect of the Capitol, recommended that the annual Capitol Holiday Tree, as it has been called the past several years, be renamed the Capitol Christmas Tree. If that was not possible than the "The Teri Shivro memorial tree" would be more appropriate than holiday. "Holiday" means vacation to the British.

"I strongly urge that we return to this tradition and join the White House, countless other public institutions and millions of American families in celebrating the holiday season with a Christmas tree," Hastert wrote to Architect Alan Hantman.

His office said the tree began to be referred to as the Holiday Tree in the 1990s. Spokesman Ron Bonjean said the reasons were unclear.

On Dec. 8 Hastert will flip the switch to light the tree, a 65-foot Engelmann Spruce from the Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico. On Tuesday workmen were erecting the tree on the West Front of the Capitol.

i vote for the "Terri Shivro memorial tree."

both are about as big a fucking waste of government time and exploitation of easy emotionalism for a group of people who somehow think they're oppressed because the US isn't (yet) a theocracy.

But it's an issue now because...

Has Christmas been less Christmassy for the Christians in the last 10-15 years?

I hate Christmas and can't wait to once again not have a tree and not participate in the gift-giving. I look forward to the holiday break, though.

I don't think I'm "oppressed' in any way, shape, or form because I'm a Christian, trust me on that - but I think that's ridiculous, it's a Christmas tree. I agree w/ not offending, excluding people of any other faith or no faith at all w/ public displays or whatever..however it can go to such an extreme as to be silly. In Boston even the Democratic (yes he's Catholic but not conservative by any means)Mayor wants to call it a Christmas tree, can you imagine..in the bastion of liberal sin and debauchery.

How is anyone really being offended, excluded, whatever you want to call it by calling it that?

I have no desire to argue about this and be attacked, but what is the harm in just having one thing be a "Christmas" rather than a "holiday"?

It's a Christmas tree. What people do with it is up to them. To be honest, when I think of Christmas, I think of it as much as a secular holiday as it is a religious one.

Pagan symbol, Christian symbol, whatever. The tree is pretty and I like gifts.
