Most people on here are probably unaware that this year is the 50th anniversary of the notorious Suez crisis, when France, Britain and Israel conspired to launch an unprovoked attack on a sovereign country (Egypt).

1956 was a seismic year, and probably a more accurate start of the (post)modern era than 1945. the Suez Crisis was the first time the US and the USSR flexed their superpower muscles and the traditional European powers (Britain, France) had to defer, Elvis exploded onto the charts with "Heartbreak Hotel," Morocco declared independence from France, constitutional union between Indonesia and Netherlands was dissolved, Ike adds "under God" to the US pledge of Allegiance, Hungary rebells against the USSR, and we had the first EuroVision Contest.

and here we are today.

Interesting points. :hmm:

i wrote a paper on "Elvis and The Sublime" in college -- 1956, the year and its events, was a big part of that.
