In word, yes, but not necessarily in deed.

The Hollywood community is contradictory that way. Here's my take on Hollywood: The Hollywood community promotes liberal causes, hold fundraisers for said causes, largely votes Democrat and holds fundraisers for Democrats. Yet, this same community is filled with producers and writers who have sexist, racist and homophobic tendencies. Actually there's probably more sexism in Hollywood than you'll find just about anywhere else.

Thanks for the clarification Diamond.

Protestors aren't out there to make Osama, Saddam etc LIKE them. It's not about getting the other side to like you, it's about getting Bush to not go to war, be you from Hollywood or Indiana.

The film industry runs the gamut of different idealogies.

What is perveted is-
-their payments as entertainers,
-the clout we give them as "all-knowing-gurus"
-worshipping them as idols..
That's market forces, diamond. I would think that you wouldn't challenge the awesome power of capitalism for something as socialist as salary caps.

the "liberal-hegemony" is not necessarily the message of the movies, but the mindset of the PEOPLE that make, act and produce them.
The people who make them are the movie studios, and the only "liberal" films you get are possibly independent films. Commercial films, with all their sex and violence, are all generally conservative in message.

I am not going to kid myself
I don't know 50% of what Sadam is up to
and I don't know 50% of what the US is doing to take out Sadam

I am not going to protest something I know near to nothing about
and I'm pretty sure I'm better informed than most Hollywood stars

I agree with Diamond that it's at least ironic that Hollywood actors (who indeed in many ways represent what the likes of Osama despise about western society) feel the need to speak out on this subject

I know that's the popular theory being tossed about, and I believe it was the "official" explanation put forth by the Bush administration just after 9-11, but I've got what I think is a more plausible explanation, diamond. I'll share my views with you over a beer in Vegas.

Because they are also US citizens and have every right that I or any other citizen has and that is the right to peacefully protest. The difference is the media at the protest migrate to the celebrities. They are using their "celebrity" to highlight a movement or whatever in the same way Bono does for DATA

I don't know about this show, honestly. On the surface, yes, it is quite conservative. However, if you look at the context that the conservative values are brought across, it is often as laughable as a bad 1980s sitcom. I really give this show kudos for very good writing, though, for making me think this hard about an otherwise indecent cartoon...lol.

you know, im going to do a turn-around on this thread.

though i was never completely against diamond's views on this, i wasnt totally for them.

thinking about it, ive realized that the more spoiled one person or a collective group (ie hollywood) becomes, the more likely they are to rebel or "bite" the hand that feeds them. hollywood should not be looked at for anything other than for sheer entertainment value.

taking their message to heart would be ludicrous.

I still don't really get the point of this thread unless someone has proof that people out on the streets recently were in fact all brainwashed sheep following say Madonna's orders. Or something.

Hollywood is like Bill Clinton - liberal in gesture, not in substance. That's fine, I never followed them anyway.

brother diamond, i thought you might find this interesting

Grammy stars free to sing out on war

By GEORGE RUSH and ISAAC GUZMAN (Daily News Staff Writers)

Get ready for antiwar protests at tomorrow night's Grammy Awards ceremony.

Despite a report that CBS executives had considered blocking politically outspoken rockers, the network said last night it would not pull the plug on anyone protesting a war against Iraq.

The Drudge Report, an Internet news site, quoted an anonymous CBS chieftain as saying the network would cut the microphone of any rocker who engaged in antiwar rhetoric.

But CBS quickly moved to squelch the story.

"There will be no restrictions on artistic expression or opinions expressed during acceptance speeches," said CBS spokesman Chris Ender.

Musician Sheryl Crow, who made headlines when she wore a "War Is Not the Answer" T-shirt at the American Music Awards in January, plans to hand out 300 "No War" buttons tomorrow.

"If we can't turn to our artists, who can we look to?" Crow told the Daily News. "I think there will be artists stepping forward and making statements."

At Thursday's Brit Awards in London, Chris Martin of English band Coldplay said, "We are all going to die when George Bush has his way. But it's great to go out with a bang."

The Grammys will be handed out during a 3-1/2-hour telecast from Madison Square Garden.

"If we can't turn to our artists, who can we look to?" ~ Sheryl Crow
