I'm not sure "it's the economy stupid" will play Peoria anymore because of the whole terror/security thing that came in with 9/11. Right now that seems to be helping Bush. We'll see what's going on in 2004.

I have my doubts. I still see no prospects for long-term growth, with continuing unemployment, stagnant wages, and a continuing reliance on credit for spending...when that credit will both run out and have to be paid back.

To be honest, I think these economists are full of themselves, and don't know the slightest thing about the economy, aside from theory, which is skewed by ideology.

I don't think ordinary people pay much attention to economic pundits. They have to have a gut-level feeling that the economy is OK, and for this they look at their own pocketbooks--their employment situation and such, pundits be damned.

I'd say they (ordinary people) pay attention to whatever the press feeds them. Lately, all most people know is the unemployment rate.

Corporate profits = "economic recovery"
Unemployment = "who cares"

The only difference between now and the 1980s is that white collar workers are having their jobs shipped abroad this time, along with the blue collar jobs. But "who cares?" Corporate profits mean everything! :|
