The Death Of Character

What do you think of this op-ed piece - is character dead? What defines character for you?

"Character is dead. Attempts to revive it will yield little."-- James Davison Hunter,
"The Death of Character"

What an absolutely amazing title - sorry, I can't contribute anything else more but will after I read it.

This is really good. People these days are so hell-bent on success that they'll cut corners and do dishonest things to get it. It's a little ironic that the big shots are calling for "character" when it's so hard to find. What "values" are we really promoting? Are we deceiving ourselves?

When we embrace relativism, we abandon notions like character.

Basically I agree with this. It's a tough notion to accept, though, very tough.

I blame the demise of honour and to an extent pride.

Yeah, maybe it is just the absense of ideals and arrogance never helps matters. Throughout history, there have always been people who were into nothing but money and power, and there still are. There have to be people with money and power, and they can be good people, if their desires are tempered with a notion for creating some sort of common good.
