Good point, and one that I failed to make explicitly in my original post. The "wager" between God and Satan in Job isn't a "for the hell of it" kind of bet--God accepts the wager because God knows that Job is, at heart, a very faithful person.
I suppose that most people's reaction to this would be, "Well, I don't care about all that faith stuff, I just want my life to be good and a God that will give me health, happiness, and my fair share of possessions. God shouldn't allow my life to be ruined just to show Satan that I am a very faithful person." We see that Job had no choice in the matter, and we do not like that. We like to have control and think we are in control of our lives. That is not the truth though, certainly not in the big picture. God has given humanity a role in the battle b/w good and evil. Alot of us don't want to fill that role though. We would rather just watch from the sidelines as God solves all the problems.

Past the seeker, as he prayed, came the beggar and the crippled and the beaten. And he cried out, "Great and powerful God, why do you do nothing about all this suffering?" God replied, "I did do something. I made you."

Job's wife didn't die, did she?

I thought Job's "final straw" was when he started to get the skin sores so badly that he couldn't even sit down, stand, or lay comfortably. It's just a minor detail, but I guess I'm kinda nerdy that way.

Job chap. 1 , there are 42 link here

she does not die
just gets to watch her children die
and Job gets double what he loses
and gold and silver
and they get 10 new kids the daughters more beautiful than the ones God let the Devil kill

the sores are early on
it gets much worse

I suggested a Bible discussion earlier, should we just do one on Job?

Ah, okay, I thought his wife died. Been a while since I read it.

I'm sure Job's first set of children were really thrilled with this bet.

Job's first set of children do seem like collateral damage, don't they? Their stories are not told. However, every person's part in God's plan cannot be explained in one Book. I guess I just have the faith to believe that God loved them too, and didn't just wipe them out for no purpose.

I'm not familiar with Sufi beliefs/teachings (see Pax's quote above). Can anyone enlighten me?

I am very interested on how many of you read the Bible. I can honestly say I am shocked by some of your answers! I think it is great how in touch some of you are with your spiritually. I can honestly say I only read some verses in the Tanakh. As you can tell by now, I am Jewish and we call the Old Testament the Tanakh.

I have a couple of favorite Pslams and passages. My two favorite Pslams are Palam 23 and Pslam 40. My favorite stories have to be Abraham sacrificing Isaac, Jacob and Rachel, and Moses.

It was really great to read some of your post and I hope you enjoyed mine.
