Normally I don't like to make such generalizations, but I'd say Gandhi's summary there is quite a 'typically Hindu' way to think--not exclusively about Jesus, but rather concerning any of the rare individuals one views as revered exemplars of what in Hinduism is the moral and even metaphysical ideal of all-encompassing selfless devotion to the good of others.

am i a cynic for cringing at this prolonged concept of martyrdom? i know they say catholics are full of guilt, but sheesh.

^ Assuming you're referring to Gandhi specifically--an argument is in fact sometimes made that at times his asceticism veered into outright fetishization of self-mortification. I doubt though that this particular quote likely reflects anything like that; I no longer recall its specific context, but I recognize it as being from his now-quite-obscure essay collection My Non-Violence, which is very much about nonviolent resistance as a political strategy, not a moral or religious virtue (though it's characteristic of Gandhi's thought that the three intertwined for him; after all he dubbed his own political philosophy satyagraha, 'Truth-grasping'). I wouldn't say though that he idealized "martyrdom," literal self-sacrifice, as such; rather that one must value what is good and right over one's own life, so that there's no reluctance whatsoever but on the contrary a sense of gratitude at being offered the honor of giving your life out of love for others.

And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?
