There's discussion going on in Zoo Station, too.

This is so sad. Seriously. He did so much for animals and the environment and was so sincere about what he did.

oh my god!!!! my kids love the crocodile hunter! what the hell am I going to tell them!!!

I feel so bad his children are so young!!! Prayers go to his family and especially his daughter they were very close.

Such a tragedy. We have all lost someone very special who devoted his life to caring and protecting those who were unable to do it for themselves.

Awwwwwww.............what a tragedy - he was an Australian icon and a very funny person.

I loved his catch phrases: "You BEAUT!" and "Crikey!".....they were as much a part of Australia as koalas and kangaroos.

I have a few of his shows taped and his boundless energy was a great source of amusement. I also watched his programs in order to prepare myself for my trip to Oz next year.

The Australia Zoo will not be the same without him....nor will the entire country for that matter.

G'bye Steve....you'll be missed, s'truth!....

From the CNN website:

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin, 44 was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified. Irwin was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.
Irwin became a popular figure on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture and relocation of crocodiles.
Irwin's enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following. He was known for his exuberance and use of the catch phrase "Crikey!"
But his image suffered a setback in January 2004 when he held his then 1-month-old baby Bob while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo. (Full story)
In a statement released to Australian media, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed his sorrow and said that he was fond of Irwin and was very appreciative of all the work he had done in promoting Australia overseas.
In 2003, Irwin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s Australian Story television program about how he was perceived in his home country.
"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said, the ABC reported.
"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing. "You know, there's this... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty'."

An Australian icon I genuinely respected, and an all round nice bloke, he did so much for animal conservation. He gave virtually all his millions to a cause in which he felt passionate about. What a loss. :(

RIP Steve  God must need another angel in haven.

steve ? angel ? you must be kidding lol.

that guy will be remebered as a hell raiser

Many of God's best angels are hell raisers - for the right things in this life.

Steve, at least for the future of this world's environment, may very well have been one of them.

I woke up on a holiday only for my mom to tell me this.

I am a huge Steve Irwin fan and right now I feel shattered. I don't care what anyone says about the way he talked or acted funny, no one can deny his impact on conservationism and how loyal he was as a friend, son, husband, and father. Steve Irwin taught me everything I needed to know about reptiles and is a large part of the reason I want to go to vet school.

I feel just awful about this. Steve Irwin had such a passion and genuine love for animals, and it was infectious. He will be greatly missed. :(

Irwin did dangerous things with unpredictable animals, and he did it with great enthusiasm and flair. That he might die in an encounter with an animal surely crossed the minds of all who knew him, tragic as the reality is.

:(

A sad loss. I used to watch him on TV when i was a kid and i was mesmurised as to how he used to have some sort of telepathic bond with those animals.

A great man.

i'll be raising a glass to Steve tonight
