Following Oprah's 2 part look at American high schools and Time's upcoming Dropout Nation cover story, I'm curious to know what the many educators, students and parents here feel about the state of the public education system and The Gates Foundation's Stand Up call to action.

Considering the alarming dropout rate, I thought these stats were interesting:

* High school graduates live an average of almost 10 years longer than dropouts.

* If our workforce had one more year of education, economic growth would increase by 5% to 15%.

Interesting figures, however I am perplexed and wonder what data and formulation was used to base the percentages above?

There's a flow chart (page 4) of some direct and indirect factors in this study although it's not where those figures come from...
