Southern Baptists Quit World Alliance

It appears to be a mixed bag. IMHO, it is completely fair for a denomination to reject an alliance that backs away from an affirmation of "the necessity of conscious faith in Jesus Christ for salvation" or "the truthfulness of Scripture" (both descriptions of the press, not taken directly from official statements). There are other disputable issues which add to the fire.

I'm not surprised. The Southern Baptist Convention totally runs my state. They have become so allergic to liberal *anything* that some members, including a former state Christian Coalition head, have quit in protest. Interestingly, this former CC official was recently received into the Roman Catholic Church with his wife. Naturally some Baptists are terribly unhappy with this turn of events. Never a dull moment in our churches.

I think they have some legitimate complaints. It's about the gazillionth split in a local Protestant denomination over these issues. There have also been many splits in the Presbyterian and Lutheran congregations over the same issues. It's not an "I hate your guts" thing; it's honest doctrinal disagreement. It's more like the conservative and moderates decided that they needed to split in order to move on. I personally tend to agree more with the moderates in these controversies, but that's just me.

I'm not surprised. They have a history of infighting and splitting up into factions. Just about every town in the south has numerous Southern Baptist churches but only one of everything else. My Mama always said it was because they couldn't get along and each one was more holier than thou. Right now I know of 2 that are in such competition they have to have the biggest building and keep adding on. Then one got a flashing sign like in front of a casino. They had so much overflow in the parking lot they had to park people in the lot at the high school and got complained about for separation of church and state so guess what they did? They bought 2 nearby homes, perfectly good homes about 40 years old, solid brick, good shape, and had the city use them for controlled burns for fire dept. practice! So they burned down those perfectly good houses a lot of poor people could use just to get the land to expand the parking lot. Arrrgh, at the going price they must have given close to a quarter mil for the two houses combined, mighty expensive parking lot, sad waste of 2 good houses somebody could have lived in, and can you image the amount of money they must be collecting off of members to be able to do that??!!

They sure do Poptart. (as per infighting and such) Right now two local churches seem to be competing for Biggest Southern Baptist Church in Jefferson County. One is right next door to the library. I just hope they don't try to swallow us. The other ones owns about half of one of the suburbs. I've lost track of how many buildings they own.

:tsk:

Knowing how Jesus felt about the money changers I wonder what he'd say if he were to come upon them acting like that, having who's the biggest competitions and fighting?

I don't think He'd like it.

promoted women preachers, criticized the SBC and its foreign mission board and adopted an "anti-American" tone.

Well we all know we're heading towards hell as soon as we start letting women preach. Hell we're probably already there for letting them vote.

And shouldn't a church's priorities be in spreading the word and love of Jesus...last time I checked Jesus wasn't American so maybe people should get off the "anti-American" crap.

The World Alliance deserves better than the Southern Baptist Convention. In fact, the WA should have booted the SBC out a long time ago; they are the furthest from being authentic Baptists. They are traditionally quite liberal, and it was Baptists in 1803 that pushed Thomas Jefferson to write his famous "separation of church and state" letter.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

I should be calling it the WBA, the World Baptist Alliance. It's the international group of Baptists. It was founded in 1905. I'm going to start to research earlier Baptist groups. I don't know anything about these people.
