So generally I wind up getting annoyed at the amount of banal, unimaginative stuff I have to listen to before I find something interesting, and give up.

Yeah, most of my stuff is from the sixties and seventies, since that's when i lived in Pakistan. I've tried to get the five-disc anthologies of most of those well-known Indian singers. We used to listen to Radio Ceylon in Pakistan (yes, before it was called Sri Lanka) and tape Indian songs on reel-to-reel tape off the radio. So, it's mostly the classics. I try not to be too indignant of the Bollywood music these days (though it's hard)...don't wanna sound too "oh, the kids don't know what real music is like anymore." But, yes it's all pretty unemotive, as you said.
